Corrupt User Profile/Issues Creating A New User Profile

M

Maxy

Hello. Recently, my computer froze up, so I was forced to
shut it down. When I started it back up, I got to the
Welcome screen of Windows XP Home Edition, when a notice
popped up telling me my user profile was corrupted. I also
get logged onto a temporary profile that clears itself each
time I shutdown, throwing out any changes I make. I checked
the Microsoft help file for this on the website, and I
found I would have to create a new profile AND copy all of
my information from my old one to it if I wanted to keep
everything. The problem is, when I go to create a new
profile, the user profile folder is blank/white. The only
thing that shows is the back, forward, and home buttons at
the top.

What should I do? Is there a way in the command prompt that
I could create a new profile?

Maxy, this is where the hidden administrator account comes in. When XP
was first installed it was with this account, then you had to create
another account with admin rights. Hopefully it's this second account
that became corrupted. Boot into safe mode by restarting and tapping
the f8 key when it starts up until you get the menu that has safe mode
as an option. Choose that. At the user name and password screen type
in "administrator" without the quotes as the name, and leave the
password blank. Once logged in create a new profile.

Hi Maxy,

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a system
restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message began to
appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change and
then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to use.
You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to try them ASAP.

And to Hilary: For some reason, when I booted into the
admin account in safe mode, I couldn't find the user
account creator! It wasn't in my control panel. Is it
somewhere else?

hmmm...I don't know why. You are using the Home edition though, I have
Pro, and don't know if that is a difference in safe mode. How about
trying this.

Go to Start | Run and type in "control userpasswords2" without the
quotes and press ok. Does the User Accounts dialog box open? If so
create the account by clicking on Add. The wizard walks you through it.

Let us know how it went.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to try them ASAP.

Hmm, is right and how interesting. Will have to use VPC to verify. I don't
have Home installed at the moment, either.(
