Copy text to new doc changes style in new doc

I want to copy the text of one document to another.
I am sure I''ve read somewhere - I thought within http://word.mvps.org/faqs
- that if I copy text in one doc (1) and paste it into another (2), then any
styles that have the same name will take on the attributes of the style in
doc 2.
When I paste, the Normal style takes on [paragraph 7pt after each line].
The text being copied uses columns and tables, so I'm hoping to do a simple
paste without having to recreate too much of the formatting, but why on Earth
is it changing the style in my nice new template that DOESN'T (didn't) have
line spacing on the Normal style?

Thanks for your response.
I had done a Ctrl+A, Ctrl+spacebar, Ctrl+Q in doc 1, so I don't understand
how it changed my Normal syle in doc 2 to now have 7pt after.
I thought my styles in doc 2 would be safe and only modified if I modify
them or if I tick Automatically update (which I don't for any style, ever).
I have made this one file, but I want to know for next time what to expect.

When you are using W2007 the defaults are

Pasting between documents — Keep source formatting
Pasting between documents when styles conflict — Use destination styles.

So you would have to be picking up text in the normal style and pasting it
into a position where the style is also normal, but with different settings,
to get what you expect.

To avoid having to pay attention to all that, paste as unformatted text,
unless, of course, you need to preserve manual formatting..
