Conversation Topic view and Thread-Topic different to Subject headers

Where does the Thread-Topic field come from and why might it be
    different from the Subject field?

I've noticed recently in OL2002 that in folders that have a
Conversation Topic view, the messages are threaded by the Thread-Topic
field and this is often not the same as the Subject - and is usually
    totally unrelated!
The message authors have no idea where it has come from.

Is there any way to change the Conversation Topic view to display and
    thread the messages by Subject?
