Confused: networking with WinXP Pro and Win 2K Pro

Networking can be so dificult. Here's the setup: 2 PCs connected to a
Motorola Wireless/4 port router which is connected to a Motorola Cable modem.
PC1 is running XP Pro w/ SP2, and PC2 is running win2k pro w/ SP4. Both
machines are connected to the router with cat5e cables. Both machines can
browse the internet with no problems. The difficulties arise when one wishes
to share files between PC1 & PC2. ( side note : VNC4 works flawlesly between
the 2 PCs) Both machines are partitioned NTFS and they have matching acounts
(PChucks Blog) and they still cant connect. the XP box can 'see' the Win2k
box, but the Win2k box can't 'see' the Xp box. I am thinking it is a Security
policy on either one or both of the PCs that is causing this. (This worked
when I had Xp Home on PC1.) I don't know where to start. The Xp box has
Mulltiple users and security "permisions" on their personal folders/drives.
Both PCs are running Zone Alarm Firewall software.

This is want I want to do:
1> Enable both machines to share files between them.
2> Make it possible for a particlular user to have access to his/her files
no matter what PC they are loged into.
3> Prevent same users access to each others files.
4> Lock down the outside connections (is the NAT router and software
firewall sufficent ?)

appoligies for any confusion, and Thanks for any and all help.

Try:

1. Uninstall ZoneAlarm. After you get file and printer sharing working you
can reinstall this software and configure it as necessary.

2. On the XP machine, disable simple file sharing:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307874

3. Either disable the XP firewall or configure it with an exception for
file and printer sharing.

You can easily accomplish your goals with Share and/or NTFS permissions.
You have 3 firewalls available to you(Router, XP, and ZoneAlarm) - Do not
run 2 software firewalls on a machine at the same time.

Charles,

When you work on network problems, you have to start at the bottom with
connectivity, then move thru name resolution and browsing, and finally to
permissions (matching accounts). A non-symmetrical visibility problem is a
pretty common browsing problem.

Check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:
