Computer on APC BackUPS battery backup goes into standby on its own

Hello!

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 desktop computer that is plugged into an APC
BackUPS battery backup. At random times, it goes into standby on its own,
even though the power settings are set to Always on and never go into
standby mode. No APC software is installed. When it is awaken from standby,
there is a warning message about a low battery...but it is on AC power!

I have the following error in the Event Viewer.

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Date: 10/18/2008
Time: 10:15:21 PM
User: N/A
Computer: TAX-2
Description:
Application popup: Critical Battery : You should change your battery or
switch to outlet power immediately to keep from losing your work.

Googling turned up this thread
http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php?t28424.html where one
person said he would post a "registry fix" but never did post it. Does
anyone know of this professed fix?

I am going on site later today to test the battery itself.

Thank you!

Gregg:

I had the same problem, it turned out to be a bad battery. How old is the
APC unit, I have a whole stack of them with bad batteries.

Jason,

That is what I suspect, but I was wondering what the "registry fix" might be
in that thread. I am going there this afternoon to test the battery.

APC recommends replacing batteries every 4 years, even if the
batteries charges are still good.
