Column headings in Excel showing up as numbers, not letters

I think I accidentally hit a wrong key at the wrong time -
and all of a sudden, my column heading labels in Excel are
showing as numbers (i.e. 1,2,3, etc.) instead of letters
(i.e. A,B,C, etc.) - can anyone tell me how to recify
this.

Go to Tools>Options>General and uncheck the box marked R1C1 Reference
Style.

error msg: Name cannot resemble a reference
Old Name: e5
New Name: ______
I cannot find an "e5" anywhere in my spreadsheet

No you didn't, you did something else or it would have worked, but I have no
idea what.

Describe in detail what you did step by step.

You have a range or cell named e5 referring to R5C5

When you try to change back from R1C1 notation you have e5 referring e5.

Insert>Name>Define. Either delete e5 or change to something else.

Tools, Options, General and remove the checkmark against
R1C1 style.
