Click on .xls file icon opens program but only window border shows

The Subject pretty much says it. I searched for this
problem in the newsgroups here, but it's a little tough
coming up with the right terminology.

If I open Excel, and then open a file, all is well. If I
click on a file on my desktop - a stored Excel file - it
opens, but only the border is visible. I see my desktop
in the middle where the spreadsheet should be.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Anita

I went to search the knowledge base and found where it
said to set an option in Excel - Windows/Arrange Set to
Tile. When I did that, the program crashed. I allowed
the error report to go in and received a notice that
there was an update for Excel. I followed that and got
the Update for Excel and Word 2002. That in turn led me
to also get 6 Security updates.

After those installs, I clicked on one of the icons on my
desktop and was asked to accept the EULA and the thing
opened up just fine. It had opened some time back, but I
guess one of the updates along the way had a bug and now
it is fixed.

I have the same problem. It started when I installed 14 computers with Windows XP and with Office XP. It happens on all of them. I have the very latest patches installed and it still happens. I found that by restarting, the problem goes away for a little while but always comes back. I increased the memory and the problem goes away for longer, about a week but still comes back, even on my fastest computers with 512MB of RAM.

I'vew been searching for an answer for a year to no avail. I was beginning to think I was the only one experiencing this.
