clean that registry

After major problems. Yes I upgraded the AIW again. Several attempts to
restore, rollback to a working OS. it took with a middle version from the
original, and the current rotten version.

But in the re-install process, I now have double entries in my tray. and
msconfig won't let me delete the dupe entries.

How do I clean out these dupes in startup ? They aren't that way in my startup
folder.

Go into the registry manually (regedit) and look in the:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

branches and delte the duplicate keys.

BTDT. the dupes are not in those locations. That's the problem with XP, the
startups aren't where they were with win98.

Look also in the Startup folder under you user and under All Users.

That's what I said above. BTDT for the 2 registry entries, and the startup
folder. Actually the 2 dupe entries are in the startup folder. And have been
since I 1st installed them.

The difference is in msconfig. there's one copy in startup That I always knew
was there, [I assume that's referring to my startup folder], and the dupe copy
in 'common startup' which I have no idea where that location is. That's the one
I'd prefer deleting since it seems it's the hardest to find.

What I really need is some sort of registry repair program that really works. I
found out why security center isn't recognizing my virus software anymore
[after a 5 hour free service call online to MS was no help].

This is probably the problem. Found it in the events error log
Event Type: Error
Event Source: SecurityCenter
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1802
Date: 11/14/05
Time: 6:44:39 PM
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus and Firewall.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 02 40 00 80 .@.?

I'm searching the web right now, but the most popular searches seem to be
coming up blank.

Well here's a new twist I've never seen, but it explains dupes in the startup
folder, just not how they exist there.

folder file name 1 filename 2
startup gozilla gozilla
startup popfile popfile
startup wallpaper wallpaper

what I did was I took the 3 above and MOVED them to the disabled startup items
folder.

Then when I went back to move the 2nd one, popfile, gozilla was still in the
startup. moved all 3 to the disabled folder, and all 3 still existed in the
startup folder.

Fired up msconfig, and it was fixed.
And now I had dupes in the startup and disabled folder.
copying for as long as I can remember, can't be done if the files have the
exact same name. something like can't copy xxxx.xxx to xxxx.xxx to itself.
Invalid operation.
Yet here I had what appeared to be only 1 file name in the startups. there
weren't two copies in the startup folder.
Mystery to me.

Now if I can get :
The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus and Firewall.
this problem fixed I'll be back in business, but even MS has nothing on it.
Might help if I knew what WMI is..
