The issue of file-sharing has featured heavily in the news in the past few months. It now seems that the law is clamping down on copyright infringement on the part of the users of file-sharing (or 'peer-to-peer') software themselves - until now, the law has focused mainly on those who distribute such software. A man from Hong Kong has recently been convicted of copyright infringement, and has been fined 5,000 Hong Kong dollars (£361) for distributing films using peer-to-peer software.

This case is significant as the first successful case brought against an individual for copright infringement in such as manner, and it is hoped tht this ruling will act as a deterrent to other potential illegal file-sharers.

BitTorrent has come under fire for providing the means to exchange copyrighted material. However, it is not alone: Various other peer-to-peer software distributors have also been affected.

UPDATE: A swedish man has also been convicted of breaching copyright, and been fined 16,000 Krona (£1,145) for distributing a Swedish film online.

Read the full article concerning the man from Hong Kong here, and concerning the man from Sweden here.
