CD Packaging for Mac vs PC w/ PPT 2003

When the Package for CD function is used with PPT 2003 on a Windows XP
machine, will/should the result operate on a Mac? or does the Mac
viewer need to be packaged as well?

Thanks, Jmorse

The presentation will only run on a Mac if the Mac has PowerPoint or the
PowerPoint Viewer. The Viewer that is packaged with 2003 will not work on
a Mac.

I thought as much. Thanks for the answer.

The Package for CD function packages the PC PPviewer automatically. Can
I do this: package for CD/copy to Folder/ on my HD then copy the Mac
viwer into that same folder....if I do that, will it play on a Mac
without having the recipient have to install the Mac viewer on their
machine? IOW, what I want to do is burn *one* CD that will auto play on
both a Mac and a PC. I don't own a Mac so I can't easily test this to
see if it will work.

Thanks!

I've never done this before, so hopefully someone who has will pipe in.
You also might want to ask at the Mac PowerPoint newsgroup. It should be
possible to do what you want, but a lot of things that "should" be
possible in Microsoft products (and, to be fair, most computer products)
aren't.

One thing to keep in mind when creating presentations to be viewed on the
Mac without PPT:
The Viewer on the Mac is old. It does not run on any Mac that uses OS/X. (In
other words, any Mac bought new since March 24, 2001.)

That's mostly true, but it has only been about a year that Apple has been
selling most Macs without a "Classic" environment that lets you run older
programs. My two-year-old Mac in my office can run non-OS X applications
just fine.

Of course, the larger point is much more important (and absolutely
correct) that many Mac users won't be able to run the old viewer until
Microsoft comes out with a new one.

You can't create a CD that will autorun on the two different operating systems.
Use Package to Folder, add the Mac Viewer download file to the folder and
include instructions for Mac users telling them to install the Viewer on their
system, open it, and then navigate to and open the presentation file on the CD.
On PC's the CD will run automatically and will use the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer on
the CD to display the presentation.

Thank you once again.
So basically I can create one CD for distribution but Mac users will
have to go thru a few extra steps to use it. Did I understand you
correctly?

Yes, exactly. If the Mac user has PowerPoint installed, all they need to do is
locate the presentation on the CD and open it. If they don't have PowerPoint
they will need to install the Viewer and use it to view the presentation.

More or less, yes. Net:

- If the Mac user has a very recent Mac and doesn't have PowerPoint, they won't
be able to use the old Mac viewer, so they won't be able to view the
presentation at all.

- If they have a slightly older Mac, one that can run Classic apps, then they
should be able to install the Mac viewer (if they don't have it already) and
run your show.

If you don't have animations and media to support, PDF or possibly HTML would
be an alternative that'd work on pretty much any Mac or PC. Linux/Unix/Solaris
too, in fact.

Creating a CD that automatically runs a presentation or other application on
the Mac is quite different from doing it on the PC and generally can't be done
on the PC at all.
