Capital Letters in Cells

J

Julia

What would cause all of the letters in a cell to be
capitalized and each letter placed on a new line like
T
H
I
S
?
It only happens intermittanly on one of our computers and
with certain files. The same file on another computer is
fine. Could this be a virus? Thanks!

Any chance you have a "helpful" macro working for you?

Can you open the workbook with macros disabled and see what happens?

Thank you for your response.

This worksheet is filled with macros although not in this
cell. Most of the macros are simple calculations. I have
not tried to disable the macros because the same file when
opened on another computer works just fine. Also, it
doesn't happen everytime on the problem computer either,
just intermittantly. I'll try disabling the macros anyway
and see if that makes a difference.

We use a template to create the individual files and we
have tried retyping the template again just in case it
became corrupt but we still have the problem. That's why
I was thinking there may be a virus on the individual
computer. We have virus protection on the network but I
don't see anything on the machine itself.

This may not be helpful at all, but have you tried a different keyboard on
the PC that has this problem? Perhaps there is a sticky key.

One quick way to disable macros is to start excel in safe mode.

Close Excel
Windows start button|Run
Excel /safe

Then you can see if the change occurs.

If it happens on a few workbooks, maybe it is code that is always available.

Everytime you start excel, it'll load files from your XLStart folder and files
that are checked in Tools|Addins.

You could try to remove all of these entries and then add each back one at a
time. And test to see if the problem arises. If it does right after you've
turned one of the addins/workbooks back on, you may have found the culprit.
