Can't Receive Email Error Number: 0x80004005

I have had my notebook since November 2007. I have been able to send a
receive email using Windows Mail/Outlook Express without a hitch everyday
until yesterday. Now, I can send messages but get the following message when
there is a message that needs to be received:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x80004005

I am frustrated and annoyed! Here is what I have already done to try and
get it going again:

1) I have contacted my Internet service provider and all the correct
settings are in place.

2) I have deleted Norton anti-virus under suspicion that there may be some
issue with the semantic.

3) I have downloaded the most recent Service Pack (SP1) upgrade.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that may lead me to a solution??

Thanks!

Looks like you and I are having the exact same problem. Mine just stopped
working yesterday day (with ATT). ATT is unable to help me.

Unknown errors in Windows Mail are often due to interference from
an antivirus program. What if any antivirus programs do you have?

Did you uninstall the Norton antivirus program, rather than just deleting
part or all of its files? You may also need to run this cleanup program
take care of what the uninstall left behind:

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Does this lead to any instructions that help?

Does anyone think it's odd that several people using ATT or SBC Global are
all of a sudden having problems with Windows Mail?

Had a similar problem. And was able to get around it by going to
www.mail2web.com. After supplying your e-mail address and password, all your
e-mails will be displayed, including their size (which might be the problem).
You can then delete what you think might be the offending e-mail and try
again. Good luck.

The point is that there is no wide-spread failure caused by the server.
This is strictly individual problems with individual users.

I just had the same problem. ATT was no help, they told me it was a windows
problem. But reading another message board I was told to log onto the
mail.yahoo.com site, enter in my email address and password which brought me
to the mail that is currently on the server. I deleted everything that was
sent in the last 2 days. It fixed the problem, seems that there was an email
"stuck" on the server.

Sounds to me it was an ATT issue that they should have known how to fix.

I had the same problem as well and couldn't receive emails using Outlook
2003. The problem started on Monday, 4/21/08 and continued thru today. I
took pjc89's advice, and logged on to the web-based mail.yahoo.com, and
deleted all the email in my inbox that came in between 4/18 - 4/22. Then I
opened Outlook and did a send/receive. Voila... it completed without an
error. So that appears to have resolved the issue, but I'll know more if it
can get through the entire day without another send/receive error. It's
unlikely that the problem was due to anything that an individual may have
done since so many experienced the same problem at the same time. I think it
was some change made on the email server that for some reason caused a hang
in the emails at the time the change was made. I'm just glad pjc89 shared
how to fix it. I prefer using my Outlook client over mail.yahoo.com.

I was getting

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'XXXXX', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Error Number: 0x80004005

I went to http://mail2web.com/cgi-bin/login.asp?lid=0&il=0 and deleted
all of the e-mails I had and deleted as many of the contents as I
could in my Outlook Express folders.

I have Yahoo/ATT and it solved the problem for me.

Thanks for your feedback. It is strange that AT&T/Yahoo mail
is experiencing this error for the past few weeks, when
previously they were quite trouble-free.
