Can't open PDF websites/files

I just got a new Dell computer with Win XP Pro. When I
click on any link to PDF file(from websites, emails,
etc.), or cut and paste the URL in the address bar, the
PDF page won't open. A window appears that asks me to
either "open" the file or "save" it. If I click
on "open", the computer seems to try for a few seconds to
open the PDF file(timer icon appears next to
arrow/cursor), then it stops trying. Only a simple cursor
is left by the PDF shortcut or link. If I select to
alternative choice, to "save" the file (to desktop) a
startup explorer icon will appear on the desktop, but
once again, clicking on it fails to open the PDF
file/website. Does anyone know how to solve this one?

Actually, a blank page isn't opened. Nothing happens to
the screen when I click on the PDF Url link or icon.

(Solution: Adobe Acrobat Reader program missing)
Details: It just occurred to me that I hadn't noticed an
Adobe Acrobat Reader Program listed on my pricey new
computer. (What an oversight!) So I downloaded the free
6.0 version at Download.com. And voila, the PDF files
open quickly now, with no adverse side effects so far.
(Cautions were posted at Download.com by many Acrobat v.6
users: v.6 may best be reserved for fast new computers
loaded with memory; many users strongly urged just
staying with v. 5.05 to avoid problems. Another v.6 user
suggested using the 6.02 upgrade available Adobe site to
avoid the aggraving problems most v.6 users experienced.
Thanks to Kaylene for suggestions.
