Can't open networked printer's preference page - Operation CouldNot Be Completed

J

Jim Helfer

Server 2008 with the print server role. We have Windows XP, Windows XP
64,and Windows Vista 64 printers installed on this server.

One printer, Xerox Phaser 8400 Postscript returns the following error
when I try to get the printing preferences or printing defaults windows.

Printers: "Operation could not be completed"

Only on this particular printer and only on Windows XP/32. Vista and
XP64 drivers are fine. and, this didn't occur on the 2003 print server
that we moved from. All of our other printers (HP's) are fine.

I worked around the problem by installing the same 32-bit driver
locally, and using a TCP/IP port to get to the printer.

The incredibly generic wording of the error message has not helped me
track down any possible explanation.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Are you using the Xerox driver for this device that is included in Server
2008? If not launch printmanagement.msc and give me the driver version.

Is the print server 32 bit or 64 bit?

OK, the 64-bit driver is Microsoft v6.0.6001.18000, while the 32-bit
driver is Xerox v. 5048.300.0.0

The server OS is Windows Standard 64. So, it's only the Xerox 32 bit
driver that exhibits the problem.

Looks like I should try and get a 32-bit Microsoft printer driver for
the Phaser 8400?

Thanks

The device mode structures are different

Install the 32bit Vista driver on the Server.

Log onto a 32bit Vista SP1 machine with a user that has admin rights to the
print server. Launch printmanagement.msc. Add the print server to the
Server list. Drivers, right click Add Driver. Select x86, then the Xerox
driver and complete the wizard.

You can do this from the server as well but it's just easier using the 32
bit client
