With all second-hand computers, no matter from whom you bought it, best
practices are to wipe and format the hard drive and clean-install
Windows. Here are links explaining what you will need to install
Windows and how to do it:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#reinstall_Windows - what
you will need
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - how to do it

You will need to get the installation media for Windows and any other
programs that are installed from your professor. Legally, he was
obligated to either give you those cd's or sell you the computer
without an operating system installed.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, your wisest
course of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start
fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may
have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because
the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.
