Can't Back Up From Vista Machine to XP Machine Using Vista's Backu

I was trying to use Vista's backup wizard to backup files on my Vista machine
to another home networked machine running XP. I got an error message saying
that I can't use the wizard to backup from Vista to XP. Is there a way
around this? Yes, I have confirmed that I can file-share between the two
machines - that's not the problem.

I AM running XP Home edition on the other machine. So if I read this
correctly, I can't use Vista to do auto backups from a Vista Home version
machine to an XP home version machine. How dissapointing Microsoft! Any
other suggestions for how to do this backup automagically? Will I have this
same problem if I buy some 3rd party software for backing up? Will I be able
to run 3rd party software to go from my XP Home machine to my Vista Home
machine? What about hanging a networked external hard drive off of one of
the machines? Should that be connected to the Vista machine? Will the XP
machine be able to connect to the ext harddrive on the Vista machine using
3rd party software since XP home does not have an automagic backup program?

One way to do this is to buy an external USB 2.0 hard drive to use for
backups. This is what I do at home and it works well. I have a laptop and
desktop that I back up to the same hard drive--I just plug it into whichever
machine I want to back up to.
