Cannot send fax as media is write protected

R

Ram

I am using Vista Ultimate and have a PCI FaxModem. When I try to send a fax,
it does not go and I get an error message saying "The message could not be
sent. The media is write protected." I am not aware of anything I have done
to write protect the media, whatever it means, but could someone please
advise me how I can normalize the situation and remove the protection.

I was able to send faxes normally in Vista Ultimate until a couple of days
ago. The only "new" thing that I did yesterday was to install Microsoft
VirtualPC 2007 and then install Windows XP Pro as a guest operating system
as I wished to be able to use some legacy software which Vista will not
run.. I followed it up with trying to fax through Windows XP but could not
because there was a problem getting XP to recognize my modem, which is a USR
56K PCI FaxModem. So I gave up hoping to use Windows XP (though I still
prefer Windows XP's Fax utility to Vista's) and went back to the host system
for sending faxes. Now I get the error message "The message could not be
sent. The media is write protected." when I try to send any fax, either as a
direct message or by printing to "fax" in MS Word or in PaperPort. I checked
the properties of the documents I was trying to fax and in all cases
observed that the "Read Only" box was unchecked or blank, which I understand
to mean that the documents are not write protected. I feel that somewhere
down the line "Windows Fax and Scan" in Vista has got damaged since all
other features of Windows Vista Ultimate are working smoothly. Is there any
way to repair Windows Fax and Scan without affecting the rest of the
Operating System? Or do you advise I do a System Restore from an earlier
backup that I have saved in an external hard disk using Acronis True Image?
I cannot do a normal System Restore from within Vista because I have turned
off this function due to the very large amount of space required. Sorry
about not giving all these details in the first instance.

I've seen no similar errors reported so far with WFS. Your problem appears
to be at the OS level, perhaps with file permissions that became altered
when you installed VPC on Vista. What happens if you run WFS elevated?

I cannot since I have disabled System Restore due to the high amount of

will do this restoration and let you know if the problem has cured itself.

Further to my erstwhile post, I have just now completed a Backup Restoration
of Vista Ultimate, and the WFS program is working normally. I still have the
Virtual Machine because I had installed it in the D-drive whereas the

I do suspect VPC is involved in some way. I've sure never seen the error
message you're reporting under any other circumstances, and I'm not sure how
well VPC has been optimized for Vista. Almost none of the software I need
runs on Vista, so it would not surprise me if VPS has its problems. I also
know that Microsoft Fax software is uniquely intolerant of using a modem
that has been initialized by any other fax software.

Hello Ram & Russ -
Luckily I found this post today. The same error happened to me in Vista
Ultimate without having virtual pc 2007 installed. With me, it had nothing
to do with virtual pc - I did have virtual pc installed a while ago (before
reinstalling the Vista o.s.) and did not have any problems with fax at that
time. The fax modem is internal, in my notebook. I checked all the modem
settings, made sure the fax "was allowed to send and receive faxes", and
every other configuration setting I could find. I was getting the same error
as a standard user or administrator.

I did get it fixed, and wish I could tell you exactly what fixed it.
Yesterday I created a new user account for myself, running as a standard
user. Today the first time I tried to fax, I got the same fax error as you
did. I think the problem was that Windows Fax was looking for a folder I had
set up before, called "FAX STORE" but I could not change the default folder,
even when logged in as administrator - I didn't have "permission" to do that.
Now explain that to the Administrator account. So I created that folder,
and I also gave both folders as much permission as I could stuff into them
using the convoluted permissions tools. Of course as soon as I got Microsoft
Tech suport on the phone, I found the problem was fixed. I plan to reinstall
virtual pc 2007 some time, but when I did before, it never would find my
internal modem.

I am so glad I found a post by someone else that had the same problem! Best
regards, Marilyn V

Don't forget that even though you are using an administrator account, you
are not running as an administrator most of the time in Vista unless you
elevate the app to "Run as Administrator." There is a well known issue where
WFS will fail when a user moves the Fax Inbox to the root drive, but this is
not the error message that is given in that circumstance. I'd still love to
know if anyone can provide the steps that will repro the "Media is write
protected" error.

Hello Ram & Russ -
Luckily I found this post today. The same error happened to me in Vista
Ultimate without having virtual pc 2007 installed. With me, it had
nothing
to do with virtual pc - I did have virtual pc installed a while ago
(before
reinstalling the Vista o.s.) and did not have any problems with fax at
that
time. The fax modem is internal, in my notebook. I checked all the modem
settings, made sure the fax "was allowed to send and receive faxes", and
every other configuration setting I could find. I was getting the same
error
as a standard user or administrator.

I did get it fixed, and wish I could tell you exactly what fixed it.
Yesterday I created a new user account for myself, running as a standard
user. Today the first time I tried to fax, I got the same fax error as
you
did. I think the problem was that Windows Fax was looking for a folder I
had
set up before, called "FAX STORE" but I could not change the default
folder,
even when logged in as administrator - I didn't have "permission" to do
that.
Now explain that to the Administrator account. So I created that folder,
and I also gave both folders as much permission as I could stuff into them
using the convoluted permissions tools. Of course as soon as I got
Microsoft
Tech suport on the phone, I found the problem was fixed. I plan to
reinstall
virtual pc 2007 some time, but when I did before, it never would find my
internal modem.

I am so glad I found a post by someone else that had the same problem!
Best
regards, Marilyn V

What I was trying to say was that I have now re-installed Vista on my C-
drive using an Acronis Backup which I had made a few days ago, and all is
working well now, including Windows Fax and Scan in Vista. I have also
installed Virtual PC 2007. I did not have to re-install Windows XP in the
Virtual Machine since it was already there in my D drive (Data). Both
Vista
and XP are now functioning fine, and I will do all my faxing from Vista
only. No more experimentation with the virtual modem in Windows XP. Once
again, many thanks for all the help and clear advice you gave for
configuring VPC 2007.

You've lost me. What did you install and where?
I do suspect VPC is involved in some way. I've sure never seen the
error
message you're reporting under any other circumstances, and I'm not
sure
how well VPC has been optimized for Vista. Almost none of the software
I
need runs on Vista, so it would not surprise me if VPS has its
problems. I
also know that Microsoft Fax software is uniquely intolerant of using a
modem that has been initialized by any other fax software.

Further to my erstwhile post, I have just now completed a Backup
Restoration
of Vista Ultimate, and the WFS program is working normally. I still
have
the
Virtual Machine because I had installed it in the D-drive whereas the
Operating System is on my C-drive. If I need to tap the legacy
Operating
System is it enough to install VPC 2007 and point it to the virtual
machine
in my D-drive? Mind you. I am now a bit wary of installing
VirtualPC2007
after all that has happened, though there may be no connection between
the
two at all.

I cannot since I have disabled System Restore due to the high amount
of
space it takes up. But I do have an Acronis Backup which I can
restore. I
will do this restoration and let you know if the problem has cured
itself.

Try going back to a system restore point prior to the VirtualPC
installation and see if it fixes your problem

Microsoft VirtualPC 2007 and then install Windows XP Pro as a guest
operating system as I wished to be able to use some legacy software
which Vista will not run.. I followed it up with trying to fax
through
Windows XP but could not because there was a problem getting XP to
recognize my modem, which is a USR 56K PCI FaxModem. So I gave up
hoping
to use Windows XP (though I still prefer Windows XP's Fax utility
to
Vista's) and went back to the host system for sending faxes. Now I
get
the error message "The message could not be sent. The media is
write
protected." when I try to send any fax, either as a direct message
or
by
printing to "fax" in MS Word or in PaperPort. I checked the
properties
of the documents I was trying to fax and in all cases observed that
the
"Read Only" box was unchecked or blank, which I understand to mean
that
the documents are not write protected. I feel that somewhere down
the
line "Windows Fax and Scan" in Vista has got damaged since all
other
features of Windows Vista Ultimate are working smoothly. Is there
any
way to repair Windows Fax and Scan without affecting the rest of
the
Operating System? Or do you advise I do a System Restore from an
earlier
backup that I have saved in an external hard disk using Acronis
True
Image? I cannot do a normal System Restore from within Vista
because I
have turned off this function due to the very large amount of space
required. Sorry about not giving all these details in the first
instance.

Not until you provide us with actual details on what you are
doing.
Pretend we can't read minds.

OK, I right clicked on windows fax and scan and chose "run as administrator",
put in the
password, and tried one more time to change the store folder but I still get
the message
that says: "You do not have security permissions to complete this
operation. Contact your fax administrator for more information" (wish they
told me where the fax administrator is :)

My fax store folder is located in D:\Documents. I'd delete the folder named
in the fax
program and try it again, but unfortunately I need to be faxing now for my
work, and can't afford to get it too messed up. I really think that might
have been the problem - I had moved the fax store folder over from the user
data folder where it is supposed to be, since I want everything in my
documents so I can back up easily to external hard drives. And the fax
program was looking for the name of the old folder under the deleted user
account.

Thanks for your response! Marilyn V
