Cannot post to newsgroups.bellsouth.net

I have had no problems with Windows Mail and can read and post to my
newsgroups in RC1 except that I cannot post to newsgroups in bellsouth.net.
I can read them just fine but when I try to post, I get the following error.

Windows Mail could not post your message. Subject 'test', Account:
'news.bellsouth.net', Server: 'newsgroups.bellsouth.net', Protocol: NNTP,
Server Response: '441 Posting Failed (Rejected by POST filter)', Port: 119,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error Number: 0x800CCCA9

I have double checked (quadruple checked) the setitngs and they are the same
as ever. Anyone have an idea?

What is the actual server for the groups? newsgroups.bellsouth.net or
news.bellsouth.net

newsgroups.bellsouth.net It used to be news.bellsouth.net. I tried the old
one, but didn't work. As I say the groups download and I can read them just
fine. Thanks.

There you have it: The bellsouth news server rejects your message. Maybe
you have to be online using a bellsouth connection? Or you have to
authenticate yourself to the news server? Or your post is caught by
anti-spam measures (did you try posting a simple test message in a
test newsgroup)?

Does not look to me as if the issue could be resolved from within WM.

since bellsouth POST FILTER is rejecting your message, it would be best to ask BELL SOUTH what the problem is.
are you logged in using bellsouth server.
are you using the proper user/password for that server.

Yes, tried text message; yes am logged in on BellSouth DSL; yes am using
correct username and password. I would ask them in their newsgroup but they
reject me. LOL.

If you think it has something to do with Windows Mail, you might try
downloading Thunderbird and using it.

Have you tried accessing using dial-up?

I can get to the Bellsouth newsgroups using Comcast. Is there any other
news server you might try? I just posted a message in one of the groups and
someone else said they used Google. If nothing else, maybe you could ask a
question that way. Of course, I did not have to sign in and probably went
in a different way or a different set of groups. But on the surface,
Windows Mail will post.

I just tested this from Vista and from my other machine with Server 2003 on
it, and it looks like there may be a problem with bellsouth not allowing any
posts. You might contact them.

Thanks Steve. I was suspicious that this was the case. I emailed BellSouth
tech support more than 24 hours ago and am still awaiting a response.
BellSouth support is not usally (shock!) very helpful. I expect the stock
answer almost all hardware/software providers give in these circumstances,
i.e, "we do not support beta operating systems, software, hardware, etc!"

S

Steve Cochran

Yeah, but the point is it has nothing to do with the beta, since it won't
work in current OSs that aren't beta.

In the bellsouth.net.support.adsl NG there are NO messages since the 21st of
October, so I suspect they made the entire server read only.

I was able to post from my friend's computer (he is also BellSouth customer)
and the reply I got was which one was my news server? I don't know what
that means. I had posted that it worked with news.microsoft.com also

BellSouth tech support by phone: now, that's scary. I know 50x more about everything than their smartest tech person. She is usually in a galaxy far, far away reading canned sentences from a computer screen. They aren't going to answer my email, which doesn't surprise me either. Soon HellSouth will be history as part of the SBC empire.

Interesting, I was told that BellSouth newserver only worked on BellSouth's
Internet service. I found that I was able to get to it on a friend's
computer with BellSouth DSL and I posted no problem using OE.

Does your friend have the same setup as far as router/modem? Are you
located in the same part of town?

Too bad you can't take your computer to your friends house and check it to
eliminate Vista.

Try the dial-up and if that works, it may have something to do with the DSL
setup in your area.

Get your friend to ping the news server to see if they can reach it and you
can do the same. You could also do a tracert to the news server and see
which servers are being used.

What is the newsserver name? That is what they were asking. Check on your
friend's computer under Tools | Accounts | News | Properties | Server and
look at the server name.

Let me know what it is, as I'm having the same problem as you.

cheers,

Also

I fixed it with this tip from bellsouth newsgroup

So, they do not accept posts using the MIME encoding standard? Do they host
international groups? As MIME is *needed* for non-ASCII characters to be
encoded, their server seems to be *seriously* mal-configured!
