Cannot install windows additional updates for my Window XP SP3

Sam

Hi,
I have installed Windows XP SP2 into my new computer (intel P4 3.2 GHz on
Abit ICG-7 Motherboard) from scratch. Then I went to microsoft windows
update WEB site, and it detected and installed SP3 and internet explore 7
successfully. Then it checked I need more updates : including
..NET Framework Version 1.1,
Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11
(KB941569),
Root Certificates Update

However, none of the latter updates installed, they all failed at the
initializing installation stage. The error message is "Problem : A problem
on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed"

Anyone can help ?

Thanks,
Sam.

Try uninstalling SP3 from add/remove,if it doesnt show, chk the box at top
of page "show updates",once removed/rebooted,try installing SP2 from
microsoft/downloads.Then rerun windows update..The other choice,open
event viewer & chk the events/warnings & locate the specific problem(s)..

I have installed a lot of software after installed SP3. Will it be too
destructive to uninstall SP3 and reinstalled SP2 ? What is the trade-off
here ?

I have found the event viewer under the Administrative Tools. What to look
for ?
There are a few tabs in the left column, which one to examine and how ?

Thanks,
Sam.

Uninstall SP3? There was no option to install specific security packages of
sp2.
This problem is easily reproducable, after SP3, I can't install updates,
express or custom. I don't think uninstalling sp3 is an option for people
unfortunately. Microsoft needs to resolve this and come up with a fix so
people can install security updates.

Open Start, Run, and run these commands, one by one:

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

Next time you open Windows/Microsoft Update, you should have no problems
installing new updates.

I just did this, and I just copied and pasted each command individually, and
it worked perfectly. Thank you.

I am a registered partner with Microsoft and fix PCs for a living. I also
loaded a PC with XP (original), installed SP2 and then SP3 (the full network
install version I keep handy on my flash drive). Windows downloaded a few
updates of it's own automatically and I allowed them to be installed. Then I
installed some programs (Legacy Family Tree, AVG 8 Free, Quicktime, Adobe 8
Reader, and Office 97) and tried to install some driver updates from the
Windows Update Site. I also could not get any updates to load - NOT EVEN THE
GENUINE ADVANTAGE VALIDATION TOOL.

I tried the suggested fix and it worked. This is a common problem when
spyware has disabled these DLL files, but this time either one of those
programs or SP3 has done it. My guess is that it was SP3. I hope this helps
MS to find out what has happened and how to fix it with SP3.1.

This is almost as if I was reading my self :p

I too fix comps for living, and loaded a brand new PC with Windows XP SP2
OEM, then installed all of the drivers and then proceeded to Microsoft
Update. It loaded SP3, rebooted and then wouldn't update anymore. I spent
like 2 hours looking for the right fix, i found this fix quite soon, but
didn't bother trying it, looked too simple to work :) So, SP3 is definitely
the one responsible for this error here, I didn't install ANYTHING else, just
WinXP SP2, drivers, update (WGA and others, that it installs first), then SP3
and right after SP3 it didn't update anymore. Hope M$ fixes this soon, until
then, batch file with these commands is working overtime on my trusty old USB
key when I update all the PCs to SP3.. :)

Thanks Grega! After I installed XP SP3 I could no longer install any updates.

I followed your steps and its all working again. Great!

Does that mean there is a bug in XP SP3?

Cheers
