cannot get rid of paragraph after a table??

Word is strange in that it enforces a paragraph mark at
the end of every document (in my opinion, the end of
document is enough...). Anyway, that is fine as long as
this paragraph mark has no typographic effect, which is
the case for normal text paragraphs. The problem is when
your document finishes by a table and that the
table "touches" the bottom of the last page. In this
unfortunate case, Word will add the paragraph mark on a
new line and create a new page! This is a typographical
effect. Despite the page will of course print blank, this
will increase the 'total number of pages' variable and
print that increased number where that variable is used...
Does someone has a workaround for my problem? Thanks a lot.

I have the same problem when I want to create a small
table in the footer of a document. The footer will need
room for that additional line generated by the new
paragraph, be it 1 pt....

That paragraph mark is there to stay. It contains the
formatting for what precedes it. It is the way Word is
designed. If formatting the paragraph to 1 pt. doesn't do
the trick, and expanding the margin by a few hundredths of
an inch is not an option, select the paragraph mark, then
Format > Font > Hidden. If it still wants its own page,
go to Tools > Options > View and clear the check box at
Hidden Text.

Changing the paragraph mark to Hidden works every time. Try again!

Changing the paragraph mark to Hidden works every time.

Assuming that one remembers to clear the check box
for "Hidden text" on the Print tab as well as on the View
tab of the Tools > Options dialog box!

I may be having a different problem with this. I am inserting a TOC that is
more than one page. The first line on the second page is preceded by that
paragraph mark, which forces that line over a space so it does not flow with
the rest of the TOC. I can't highlight it, though I can see it because I am
showing non-printing characters. How do I highlight it so I can hide it? Or
is there another solution in this case?

I noticed a "ghost" paragraph had appeared at the top of every page, causing
the first line of every page to skew to the right. Luckily I had a backed up
version and went back to that. I don't know what caused them, but they're
gone.
