Can you suggest an alternate to NewEgg? TIA

Andy Axnot

Like many here, I'm a long-time satisfied customer of NewEgg. Sometimes,
though, I want something quickly that they don't have in stock, or just
don't carry. I recently waited a week for a part to be back in stock, and
had signed up to be autonotified, only to see that they've pushed back the
ETA by another week.

So I've looked around for an alternate source. Most of the companies I've
come across either had poor ratings from Reseller Ratings or poor websites.
For instance, I tried ZipZoomFly which seems OK, but not very informative in
its product descriptions. These seem to be taken verbatim from
manufacturers' literature, including the parenthetical remark "(optional)".
At least NewEgg usually edits these descriptions, and also (usually)
includes pictures from different angles and of the box contents, so you have
a pretty good idea what you will get.

I prefer to deal with NewEgg because they offer very good prices,
information, and shipping, and excellent service. NewEgg is definitely hard
to match. But I need a backup source. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

mwave.com is my backup if newegg can deliver.

Have only used them once, but their attentiveness was most impressive.
Found an obsolete motherboard and had it in 2 weeks, gave me ample
opportunity to cancel if I'd wanted. Couldn't have been more pleased.

Hi,

I previously used www.allstarshop.com. They always have close to the
best prices but they're in California. From CA to PA is 7 days and I
am not that patient.

I have been using www.zipzoomfly.com (formerly GoogleGear) for the
last several computer builds.

I use them now because their prices are usually the same as
allstarshop and they most of the time 2nd day air things to you for no
extra cost!!

I understand what you're saying about product descriptions, but when
you buy computer parts you should already know what you're looking for
before you purchase. And, as always, there's much more info on the
individual manufacturers site.

ZipZoomFly has not let me down yet!

Gene, I'm not looking to do research, I just want to make sure there are no
misunderstandings when I order. For instance, the Asus K7 Terminator
compact barebones is on both NewEgg and ZipZoomFly, about $5 more at
ZipZoomFly. Does it come with a power supply? The NewEgg site lists the
power supply as "165W(PFC)". ZipZoomFly says "165W, PFC (Optional)", just
as on the Asus website.

So is ZipZoomFly charging $5 more but not including the p.s.? I doubt it.
They probably just copied and pasted the specs for this package from Asus.
If I ordered it I would probably get it with the p.s.

But if it arrived without one, could I complain?

I can just imagine the conversation with a Lily Tomlin-like customer service
rep:

"Snort, snort! And so, sir, you just *assumed* we would include a power
supply when it clearly says that it's *optional*? Snort!

Have you ever considered where the word "assume" comes from, sir? What do
the first 3 letters spell? Snort, snort."

I encountered similar problems with other products I checked at the
ZipZoomFly site. Sigh...

NewEgg just makes it so easy (usually)!

Yeah, mwave is not bad. I ordered an Asus mobo from them when NewEgg didn't
have it in stock and looked like they weren't going to stock it in the
future. (They had an ETA for a while, then just dropped all mention of it
for a week or so. Eventually they had it again.)

Still, they were nowhere near as clear in their product description as
NewEgg was. I depended largely on mwave's excellent reputation, and I was
not disappointed.

Barebones to me includes a PSU, any that I have purchased(4 or so)from Mwave and newegg have come with PSU's. Neweggs Cases are most
times WITHOUT PSU's, that puts doubt in some peoples minds, but I'm sure 'barebones' includes PSU. They offer testing for barebones
still?

speaking of newegg... when did they start charging sales tax?

If they have offices in your state, then they must collect sales tax.
Newegg is big disadantage for me, as I'm in Tennessee, and we have the
highest sales tax in the USA, just a wee bit under 10%.

I'm in Tennessee as well. I haven't ordered from NewEgg in a couple of
months and was surprised to see the sales tax add on. I wasn't aware
that they had an office in Tenn., but I know that I won't be ordering
from them anymore unless it's just a very good deal.

I do it the other way. Use www.pricewatch.com to find sources and then
check vendor reputation on their feedback section. Newegg usually wins.
However, you *must* have cookies enabled to deal with them.

Andy,

I understand where you're coming from. You have a couple good points.
I guess it depends on what you're ordering specifically.

With the last build, 2 weeks ago, I had a bad stick of memory. I
second day aired it to them. It showed shipping back to me this past
Friday. I got it today, 2nd day air again (CA to PA). Installed the
replacement this evening and all is well. Service is outstanding!!

If you're uncertain about what comes with the item I'd call. I have
had good luck calling this company. You're not talking to a bunch of
tarts when you call there.

I use Directron (as well as mwave and zipzoomfly) as my newegg
alternative. Directron in particular seems to have a decent amount of
stuff that newegg doesn't carry.

Another nice feature is that some cases (e.g. Antec SLK3700AMB) can't be
had without a PSU. But Directron will actually remove the PSU for you
and sell the case at a lower cost ($32 I think for the 3700AMB!).

I've only ordered from them once, but I didn't have any problems.

www.ewiz.com can be newegg's prices on most products and has a great
reseller rating off of pricegrabber.com. They don't have the special free
shipping deals like newegg, but they've got great prices.

I like http://www.monarchcomputer.com/ but can't say anything about
service as I have not had any problems.
