Would someone kindly post a link to fax software
built into XP? Thank you.

William,

What do you mean a link to the software ??

It is built in if you install a FAX capable modem then you get this
capability, you may also need to add it using the Add and Remove
Programs/Windows Component applet in Control Panel.

This is directly from your Help & Support Center.
Search for "fax"...it is more colorful in the H&SC.
===============================================
Using Fax

Fax provides you with complete fax facilities from your
computer. You can configure fax settings, send and
receive faxes, track and monitor fax activity, and access
archived faxes. Using Fax, you can choose to send and
receive faxes with a local fax device attached to your
computer, or with a remote fax device connected to fax
resources located on a network.

Fax is not installed by default during Windows Setup.

To install the Fax component
Open Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
In the Windows Components Wizard, select the Fax Services
check box, and then follow the instructions on your
screen.

Notes...............................

To open Fax after installation, click Start, point to All
Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications,
and then click Fax Console.
For more information on using Fax, click Help in Fax
Console.

Thank you...I followed this, and it started the installation,
then it said it needed to find a file fx.......dll and to insert
my XP Pro Installation disk. In browsing that disk, I
found the file with extension ".dl_" ......... in \i386 ....

That isn't good enough, it says. How do I get that one
installed as a ".dll"?

When it asks for the installation disk, just browse to the C:\I386 folder
and click "OK".

Brian.Tillman is the name, smiths-aerospace.com is the domain.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

That it just ignores. How do I get that one

I also tried browsing to I386 on my C:\ drive as well
as on the XP Pro Installation CD, and it doesn't find the file.... Any
more clues? FAX didn't get installed first time around (although
I certainly didn't elect not to install it). Now to install it later,
something isn't working the way the Help & Support Center
says it should.

This thread is getting long in the tooth......and no working
solution has yet been found.....at least not on MY XP.
Several people offered good advice, but none that work....

To summarize:

Control Panel>Add New Prog.>Add New Microsoft Prog>
Select FAX.....
It starts installing, stops with error window, asking for
a .dll file starting with 'fx' which didn't get installed
with original XP installation. I find that file with the
UNinstalled-typ of extension (.dl_) on the XP PRO CD.
How do I get it installed in my OS, converted to .dll
extension?

William,

Who did the initial installation? Can you ask them why they didn't
install FAX and get their hands on advice to install?

there is a facility in XP to do a repair install. I'm pretty sure it's
documented in Help how to do this. Check. Do a repair install to get
the missing files detected and fixed.

The procedure also has been re-stated in this newsgroup dozens if not
hundreds of times. Do a search.

I've never done a repair install so can't be a resource to explain how
to do in lieu of you reading it for yourself.

Rob, this is an OEM machine.....eMachines to be exact.
I want to do it myself.
The on-board Help & Support does not work the way
it says.
That's why I'm hoping the MVPs will tell me how to do it.

Did eMachine supply you with a XP CD or a eMachine restore
CD?

You may not have the media required to install services that
eMachine did not supply.

I must be doing something wrong, Rob.
All I get there is the word WARNING
repeated several times, in RED, with increasing font size.

Must be serious. Surely there is more explanation about the warning?
What is it that is being done at that moment.

Gotta say, that it comes to mind that your machine is compromised.
Virus? (The increasing font size as you describe, if I understand what
you are saying correctly, is something I've never seen Microsoft do ...
doesn't mean they have never done it, just have never seen it. Sounds
very amateurish).

I don't know. Maybe others can help.

Hmmm. They supplied a "Restore CD".....
You know, I've bothered enough nice people about this.
I have a HotFax program that works okay. I just thought
I'd look at what should be available here, since it's in
the Add Programs/Microsoft list. I'd say, thanks, let's
just let it go.

Rob, I got that funny farn screen by clicking on the link just
as you provided it. My machine is as free of viruses as
today's complete Norton AV system scan can make it.
Thanks for trying.

Oh. That web page looks perfectly fine for me with IE and Mozilla. The
"warning" text words are renddered correctly.

Sometthing is fundamentally flawed with your machine if so much doesn't
work.

TO ANY AND ALL:
I am ending this inquiry. I will not risk my machine by doing
any kind of a 'repair install'.......The system itself has told me
to install a file that isn't on my hard drive and isn't in my
installation CD. However, Microsoft FAX is just something
that should be available, and I wanted to look at it. I have
perfectly good FAX (SmithMicro HotFax) and I'll just
let Microsoft XP FAX lie wherever it is. Sorry I bothered
you-all.
