browse Network Neighborhood cant map drive!

But PC1 cannot map \\ip addr PC2\\C$ drive - it could but has stopped
working

What is odd is that

1 PC1 (win98) can browse network neighbourhood and access PC2 (Xp pro)
C: drive.

2 when mapping to PC2 I am prompted for a password and using "net use"
it comes back with "password is invalid" yet I am logged into PC1 with
same login (Administrator)/password as on PC2. This was working for
days and has now stopped working (was not prompted for password
before). I've taken down the firewalls and still a problem.

3 PC2 can map to PC1 C$ drive

4 Tried mapping to PC2 using another PC3 (win2000) which was working
but has the same problem now.

5 Have rebooted PCs repeatedly.

6 Client for MS networks is in the LAN adapter properties.

So PC1 can access the PC2 C drive files but can no longer map the
drive.

SOLUTION:

On PC1 unshared folder and then shared folder with a different name
and now PC2 can map to this.

---

However the name of the shared drive I removed was called XP C: and
not C$ yet I've mapped only to C$ from PC2 and PC3. After removing XP
C: share I attempted to share C$ and was told it already existed but
properties on C: showed no share whereas computer management showed a
C$ share.

Really puzzled as to why this was working then stopped working. I have
mapped to this PC1 C$ drive using the same login/password from a w2k
PC. When it was failing I tried to map to PC1 C$ from PC1 (yes PC1)
and this too failed ie prompted for password when it shouldn't have or
didnt previously.

I've since read that C$ is shared by default for Administrative
purposes. Which is odd as I was once shown to set to share using C$
(hidden share) and never thought much off it. So maybe I've been wrong
to use this.
