Brother 5040 printer not printing

I have a Brother HL5040 printer installed on an XP machine and shared
out. I have another machine trying to use that shared printer, but it
cannot print to it. When I hit print, I do not get an error message.
The job just sits in the printer's queue but it never starts the job.
The machine used to be able to print to the printer, and nothing that I
know of was changed to make it stop. I've tried uninstalling the
printer and reinstalling it twice. The first time I used the driver
from the disk that came with the printer, and the second time I
downloaded the updated driver straight from Brother's web site. Neither
seemed to help. All other machines using the shared printer can print
fine. Any suggestions?

I checked all of the sharing properties. They seem to be okay, and
like i said, he was able to print to it for the longest time, and then
all of a sudden he cannot print.

Check the Windows Firewall on the XP machine.

By any chance do you have Microsoft Anti Spyware installed and did you
download the upgrade yesterday? The upgrade screwed up my network and I
also could not receive my email. After uninstalling the software my
system is back to normal. I know this is reaching for straws but I
thought it might help you.

The same thing happened to me last week with my 5040 -- a networked
computer would no longer print. The user (my daughter) did not report
the problem and I found several print jobs in the queue this Tuesday.

In my case, reinstalling the printer (as a network printer vs local)
solved the problem and I did not have to re-install the drivers.

Is your connection USB or serial?

I noticed that very large files can cause this printer to crash; is
the light green, vs yellow or red? You may want to try powering it
down and clearing the queue.

Can you share files to/from this computer across your network?

HTH!
