BF 2 - Memory Error = system hang

I am getting an intermittant error that I never experienced in XP. I am
getting a Memory error window popping up after a good bit of time playing the
game. It only happens when a round is complete, and maps are changed.
Normally, it happens after an extended time playing.

During the hang, the system gets to about 40% loading the new map, then the
vista "circle" cursor pops up and spins.... The game becomes unresponsive.
After going to CTRL+ALT+DEL, I see BF2 running as well as BF2 Memory Error as
applications. Closing the Error window then shuts down the game, and takes
you back to the windows desktop.

Any ideas why this would be happening in Vista?

Quick answer is no. As part of a different experiment I was working on, I
played BF2 for about 2+ hours last night and didn't have any crashes or
memory errors, (Funny enough despite the other issues I was having I managed
to get the 20 kills I needed in the Jet to Get my Aviation badge).

In BF2142 I found I would get low Virtual memory errors if I played with
anything less than a 768MB pagefile. Maybe you have something like that
going on. Maybe set your pagefile to be a certain size or move it to a
different location (if you have another disk)

It goes without saying that if you are overclocking you should stop for the
time being.

Finally, Come on man, you know you're suppose to give your system specs, as
well as tell us if you downloaded all the latest drivers and any programs
you are running in the background.

Alright, alright....

System specs:
Pentium D 3.0 Ghz
2GB 667mhz Ram
Nvidia 8800GTS 640mb (100.64 drivers installed) factory overclocked to
550mhz core

I've shut down all non essential background services and still get the
error... Ive gone so far as to to shut down the processes for all system
updates, network services and Windows Media extentsions including all network
access for Windows Media.

I checked the pagefile, and it is set for system managed, however the
current value is at 2.5 GB. I upped that to 3 GB just now to see if that
helps or hurts.

Well, my $1.50 bet is going to be that the problem is resolved once nVidia
releases a new, better set of drivers. I can't imagine you see any
difference wit the page file. In fact, you could probably set it to 1GB and
be just as good.

Did you go through the Power Saving settings. There is an option to turn the
hard dirve off after 20 mins of idle. Of course, if you're playing it
shouldn't make a difference, but since it's crashing on map loads, you can
set that to 0 to disable that feature

Not sure if it's related or not. But I installed the 64 bit version of Vista
Home and twice now while playing BF2142 I've gotten a BSOD. Once while a map
was loading it appear to just stop, Ctrl-Esc caused the BSOD. The next time
about 15 mins into a map.

Since I am overlocking, I've scaled that back, but the OC level I'm at has
worked fine under XP and Vista32

I had those errors while I played in XP when I overclocked my cpu I would
play and it would Crash to Desktop every couple of minutes untill I stoped
over clocking my pc then it worked fine. All the BF series game has
conflicts with Realtek AC97 sound cards, I had to disable mine and ue my
soundblaster. I ended up allso scraping my Nvidia Geforce 6600 pci express
for a ATI 1300 XGE caus nvidia let me down on there support for drivers. Now
I run all the BF series game with no problems at all my system specs are

AMD 3200 64 2.1 ghz
Nforce 4 sli Epox mother board
2 gig of Ram
40 gig hard drive
VisionTek ATI 1300 XGE

In this case, it appears that evil villain is FRAPS. Which I guess is about
right, as for the past year I've have off and off problems running it.
Before it would cause problems after I close the game, but now it appears to
cause problem altogether. If I run the Doom3 benchmark, it slows it down
quit a bit. I went from 115fps to 75fps, turn FRAPS off and all is well

well, the pagefile change did squat.... I made it through 4 rounds without a
problem, then on the next map change... BAM! Memory error. I also received
a similar message after running FSX for about 1.5 hours.

I'm starting to wonder if there is a memory leak in Vista.... Never such
problem occurred for me under XP. I'm not bashing Vista at all... I like
the new OS, but I would suspect that many of these types of gremlins will be
flushed out during SP1.

You must not have ran XP when it first came out. Seems like every new OS has
a video memory leak\mismanagement initially.

I do agree that I have wondered if there is a memory leak going on, though
it could be a mix of items like particular games, hardware and software. I
think I noted somewhere else that I was playing through HL2-EP1 and the
longer I played the more memory was reported used in the Sidebar gadget. I
started out at around 67% and 2 hours later I was at 89%. I was tempted to
keep playing to see if it crashed, but I was tired and HL2:EP1 just isn't
all that exciting.

Just an OBTW, if you go to www.realtek.com, they have their official drivers
out for Vista.

no, I wasn't unlucky enough to run XP when it first was released... I also
managed to skip Windows ME and Windows 2000. I went right from Win 98 to XP
SP1....

I do wonder if I were to go from 2GB memory to 3GB or 4, if that would at
least delay these CTD's, or if that additional random access real estate
would simply be gobbled up by Vista.

I have the same issues you do to a T! I notice it happens more in titan
mode. I don't know if more ram will help cause in my case, this system uses
2 gigs. Sure hope there will be a fix soon.

Are you using ready boost? I have a 1 gb key using it. I think I will just
try to not use ready boost and see if that helps. Good luck to you.
