Best Buy Sales approach Scam or Fact??

Hi I just bought a new HP laptop (ze4402us) from Best Buy
and was told that I should have their technical group
optimize my machine. They stated that XP does not exploit
the L2 cache of my system and theirfore I would loose
performance. Have any of you heard this?? If so is their
an easy fix. Thanks

Sounds like total nonsense to me. I assume you're
referring to Best Buy where you say, "They stated
that XP...". If so, you might call HP and run the
idea by them -- they know their equipment best.

Typical Best Buy BS. If you need to do anything to improve your new
notebook's performance, either ask here or at least contact HP tech
support. Not all Best Buy sales persons are without knowledge of
what they sell, but in my experience dealing with them, most are.

Given the Best Buy "tech" folks are the same ones who told a customer ahead
of me that RAM with parity meant you had to install it in pairs, I'd ask HP
instead. Highly doubtful.

Greetings --

Best Buy is one of the very worst places in the world to get any
sort of computer advice.

What, even worse than Radio Shack? ;-)

The problem with all such places is that the employees are paid very little, in many cases minimum wage or close to it. People who know something are usually able to get better jobs.

Best Buy people are pushed real hard to sell service contracts and
technical services that are VERY HIGH PROFIT items.

There is nothing that you need to do to the laptop, other than turning
off all the XP glitz that is enabled by default to make you computer run
a little faster.

Right click My Computer, select Properties, select the "Advanced" tab,
select "Settings" in the Performance box, select "Adjust for best
Performance" and click OK (I like to check the last two boxes under
CUSTOM since I like the feel and clear icons).

That change alone will recover some base memory and performance since
WinXP doesn't have to do all those PRETTY things all the time.

The key thing to remember is that they are by definition
"Salespeople" or the new-age term, "Associates". The
only use for Best Buy employees is to help take a TV
out of the box that's too big to fit in the customers car.

Oh, much worse. ;-} My Tandy 1000 (4.77 MHz CPU, 256 Kb RAM, 20

just fine.

But we wereren't talking about the quality of the hardware sold, just the knowledge of the employees in the stores. I say it's a tossup.

I'll concede the point.

For what? Door Jam? You can find these dumped by the fence at our local
flea markets because people can not sell them and they are tired of carrying
them. Being paid a low wage is not much of a problem since that is about
what most of them are worth including those in the service department.

A: Used car salesman knows when he's lying.
