BCM contacts on a Windows mobile 6 device + VPN syncing issues

We issued our Field sales staff with Windows mobile 6 devices (HTC TYTN II) to use the push mail function in Exchange 2003 - all functions great. Now we want to give our these users access to our BCM contacts on the same device.. Currently they can only access BCM on their laptops linking to their offline database or online database over a VPN.

Is it possible to sync the mobile devices to our main BCM database via a mobile data network etc or do they have to to sync to their own laptops copies of BCM?

In addition has anyone experienced issues syncing online and offline database via a VPN. we seem to get constant failures all quoting the usual "unknown error" message?
