BCM 2007 - mssmlbiz.msi installation error

Sean O'Rear

I have installed Outlook 2007 Beta 2 on my computer. Additionally, I
already have Microsoft Small Business Accounting 2006 installed and it
is using an instance of the MSDE SQL desktop engine. During the
installation of the BCM 2007 update, the first thing the msi installer
does is "configure Microsoft Small Business Edition CD" and looks for
the file "mssmlbiz.msi". When it does not find the file it asks me to
find it on the Small Business Edition CD.

As a little background, I installed SBA 2006 from the SBA CD that was
sent to me, which has no such msi file on it (unless it is embedded
into another msi file). I also installed the BCM version 2 update from
a file that downloaded from Microsofts website (BCMV2UPD.EXE). I do
not have a Microsoft Small Business Edition CD, nor have I ever used
one. Yet there IS a line item in the ADD/REMOVE programs list for the
Small Business Edition CD 2 (wierd).

Now that we are on the same page, I found a forum post that suggested
that I explode the BCMV2UPD.EXE file into a folder and point the
installer to the mssmlbiz.msi file in there. I tried that (there were
actually two steps to this process that I will enumerate if anyone
wants to try this out) and then pointed the BCM 2007 installer to the
mssmlbiz.msi file that was produced. Then the installer said that this
was not the correct version of the file that was used and to find the
Small Business Management CD and use that version. Now I am lost as
there is no CD to go to and I used that very update file originally to
install BCM version 2.

At this point I have no way to install BCM 2007 to test it out and very
much want to try this as BCM v2 is a very poor product in my opinion
and I need some of the functionality of v3. Any suggestions?

Sean,

I would suggest you first backup and/or export your current SBA and BCM data
before continuing.

I assume you've already installed Outlook 2007? This is required to run BCM
2007.

It sounds like you currently have SBA 2006 and BCM v2 installed. Do you see
an item in Add/Remove Programs that reads:
Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006

If so, I would suggest that you click on the item named "Small Business
Edition CD 2" and then click the link labeled "Click here for support
information". What does it say? If it says that it is version 2 and there
is a link to a "Business Contact Manager" folder, then I'd say that you
should try removing BCM v2 before installing BCM 2007 and post any errors
that you might have while uninstalling v2.

Next, run BCM 2007 setup. If there are any errors, review your most recent
log files in your temp folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local
Settings\temp). I would just look at the end of the log for the error number
and then search from the top of the log file for that error number to track
down the cause. Post any interesting tidbits here.
