AVG or Avast

Hi...wondering which is better free anti-virus...AVG or Avast? I remember
the saying "you get what you pay for"...but then again, I hear people
swearing by both products. So...are they any good, and if so...which one
reigns supreme?

Any advice given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS. Personal attacks, nitpicking & criticism
of anything but content will NOT be responded to. Those

I personally prefer to use AVG. I have used it for 2 years
and I think it is a very good antivirus to be free. It has
always warned me when there's threat a 95% of the times it
has cleaned the infection. With the exception of very very
new viruses that it might not see.

I dont want to say AVAST is a bad option but when I
installed it I had to reinstall windows. maybe it's not
bad but it was my experience.

There is also a professional version of AVG, it has technical support for any problems.

Al, I use AVG Pro 7.0 and I consider it to be excellent, subscription is for
two years and is a lot lower than some of the other AV Programs.

I recommend it to anyone that asks for my opinion and I have also installed
it for a lot of people without any complaints.

The one point Avast! has over AVG (I think...) is that it updates
automatically, rather than having to do it manually. Does AVG have this? I
can't remember....

Thanks for the reminder....Avast! looks for updates automatically (both
program and virus database) whenevr you are connected to the internet.

As, of course, does AVG. Just set it to check automatically for updates
every day.

Hmmm - Avast! does this by default - you don't have to check anything!

Well then use AVAST.

How hard is it to check a box 1 time?

I use AVG and like it.

I use Avast and have had no problems with it. I can't use the free
edition of AVG as my computers are networked and Grisoft explicitly
forbid this.

AVG6 (the free version) updates automatically at a preset time each
day or at intervals of several days depending on the configuration
setting. The default is to check every 14 days.

Also the check only occurs at the specified time on those days. But
it will automatically check for, download, and install any available
updates.

I have my computer set to check at 6 p.m. daily as the computer is
invariably running at that time and I am probably away from it having
dinner. The update check has been 100% reliable for me.

Hi:

Although I use and like AVG, my primary AV (also free) proggie is
Anti-Vir Personal Edition.
http://www.free-av.com/

It releases updates more often (every 2-3 days) which helps keep
me more on top of the latest virii. It also examines just the files
that could contain a problem and not every single file on my system.
Thorough and fast.

I tried Avast for a while and it seems thorough too but I don't
care to have TSRs running at start up and in systray.

I do miss InnoculateIT ... the best I ever used but sadly no
longer free.

Happy trails,

There are no "TSRs" anymore. If you mean "background services", then you'll
have to back to Windows 3. Since Win 95, we've had background services
running.
