AVG Email Scanner Not Working

C

Caliban

I have the free edition of AVG anti-virus but am still receiving about 50
emails per day with infected attachments. The Email Scanner doesn't pick
them up, nor does the Boot Scanner, or the daily Complete Scan. I have the
Outlook Express 5 plug-in activated (although I'm using Version 6), and I
recently emptied the Inbox completely.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Your ISP may be stripping out the virus before letting the messages come to
your pc. Many now do this. So, it's not at all clear your AVG isn't
working.

I certainly hope that's the case, but highlighting an email with one of
these attachments still results in a pop-up inviting me to open or save the
attachment to disk. I'm assuming that means these things are still active.
As I said previously, the daily clean-up doesn't recognise these things
either.

Thanks.

My AVG 6.0 : The "full scan" option detected Swen but the
"resident shield" had not. Oh, yes, all updates were in place before the
infection. John M.

WHY DO YOU NOT USE THE PROGRAM "SPAMBUSTER" IT WORKS FINE AND IT LOOK
FIRST IN YOUR MAILBOX ON THE SERVER FROM YOUR PROVIDER.
THEN YOU HAVE A LOT OF EMAILS THEN YOU SEE THAT THEY SELECTED WITH A
"RED MARK".
LEAVE IT IS IT IS, BUT YOU CAN SELECT EMAILS THAT YOU WANT.
THE REST WILL BE DELETED.

THIS IS THE BEST PROTECTION AGAINST VIRUSSEN.

GOOD LUCK,

[ouch! rest of CAPS snipped]

Dear time traveller, welcome to the year 2003! This is no 80's NCR
host, so you don't need to type everything in CAPS. While you were
away, we found out that TYPING IN CAPS is not polite, but it's like
SHOUTING! You didn't want to shout at us, did you?

Please try to switch off that Caps Lock key. Sorry, but I couldn't
resist from some "netcopping" this time, because my eyes hurt reading
your messages ;-).

Thanks

Gabriela

I tried to install AVG antivirus on my WIN98 PC with OE6 and it doesn't
check for viruses in incoming mail. If I check the option "use OE5 plugin",
it makes the checking, but only for outcoming mail, not for incoming ones!

That's true! I think it is a bug...

It is not a bug. It is a feature. AVG V6.0 was not upgraded for OE6 as
they were working on AVG V7.0. I don't have V7.0 so I do not know if it
works. I do know that I was pointed to a beta version of the email
checking function that used a proxy method that downloaded the email first
then passed it to OE6. I could not get it to work. I use Mailwasher to
preview the email and have set it up to query several blocklists and it
seems pretty good at identifying viruses so they never even get to my
system.
