I've been unable to get version 6 to download an update
file to my daughter's PC. (I've put off installing v7.)

Sorry if this isn't relevant. (I forget when AVG said
that v6 would no longer work at all.)

AVG6 is no longer supported, and after reading the contract for AVG7 (we'll
use your info any way we like & sell it to anyone for 10 years) I decided to
change to Avast. It works just as well and faster!!

I have been trying all morning to get an update on two different
machines. It would show me the update then just disconnect and sit there.
There must be something wrong with their servers. My tray icon is greyed
out.

I just tried again and it was different. It said "the server returned an
error". They must be working on it.

If the tray icon is greyed out, maybe you should check Control Center
to see if all features are operational--probably won't be.
I just did a manual update without any problem so their server
is working.

I've been having the exact same problem with AVG7 (yes I'm ditching both
Symantec and Mcafees).
It's having problems download a setup control file.
Since only an optional update, I'm not worrying about it. I haven't had much
of a chance to nut out what the problem might be.
Which O/S are you running? Might be an O/S problem.

Ka.

Hmmmm interesting, like the rest of you guys, it's working.
I guess it's the whole long weekend thing - someone just needed to give the
server a kick. I call that great service. :')

Joining the chorus: I have AVG7. There was a sizeable update the other
day, and now I can't update. When I check, there is a Recommended
Update and an Optional Update. Neither will download, although
sometimes they begin and stall immediately. It can be very difficult
to cancel out.

I went to Grisoft's website and downloaded the most recent updates
into a temporary folder but can't figure out where to put them. Didn't
Program Files\Grisoft used to have an Updates folder?

Same problem, AVG 7.x, Central Europe, 4 pm (about 3 pm GMT). No go.

(checks again)

heh, suddenly, there is a "priority update", too. They must have
*problems*, if they are suddenly adding something like this, don't they?

But even if I only use that one (virus definition update), I get a
"Server returned error state!"

I'm not having those problems since switching to Avast. It updates 1st
thing when I log on every day, and today I got a program update that took
less than 30 seconds on my dial up. I used AVG for a long time, but I
really like this new kid on the block!!

Put them in any folder. Then update manually.

1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to
determine if you have the correct files.

2. Open the Control Center,

3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the
Properties button at the bottom of the screen.

4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the
update source", click Apply and Ok.

5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.

6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.

7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into
and click Ok.

8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains
the same as you already had.

That should be all you need to have updated your system.

Yes, I agree... I liked AVG6 very much, but AVG has been ditched on all our
home computers for Avast now, and the slower computers work better without
AVG slowing them down...

But, as with everything in life, there will always be those that love and
prefer AVG7 (perhaps their guide dog is asleep??).. No, seriously, good
luck with the new AVG people - there were too many changes and problem for
this user, plus the new agreement, all just made AVG no longer attractive
and besides, with Avast I've managed to get rid of three virus's that AVG
didn't even know was there!!!
