Avast Virus Scanner Question

Freeware avast! 4 Home Edition

How reliable is this program? Any problems?
Does it detect the same amount of viruses like Nortons, Mcafee?
I'm actually testing it out-right now.
It has not cause any crashes yet.
It is the only one I know of that will do a boot scan before xp loads.
I will go back to nortons-because I get year of free updates.
Then may go back with avast next year.
Grisoft avg crashed when I did a test, Avast didn't

Just for information.
Nortons is not installed.
I have a backup with & without Nortons
