I would not worry about the issue yet. Please also try start, all programs,
microsoft antispyware, microsoft antispyware update.

I have the same problem with not being able to update and
getting the "unable to detect an internet connection"
message.

However, I am using Windows 2000 Professional Edition,
Service Pack 4. I tried to find some easy way to alert MS
to the problem and this newsgroup is the only place. It is
at least good to know that I am not alone in this very
frustrating problem.

I just posted a reply to Richard's original message but
then read this reply and tried what you suggest, going
from the start menu, but still no update.

I don't have a fix. Others have said that this condition has spontaneously
cleared up on their systems. You might try clearing files in the temp
directory--use System Cleanup under Accessories, if you don't know of
another method.

You might check this KB article to see what definitions are actually present
in the directory where Microsoft Antispyware is installed:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892519

and keep an eye on announcements of definition updates--if it goes through
another cycle without your receiving an update--these have often been as
infrequent as weekly--write back again.

I went to the list of updates and I am not up to date.
That leads me to one more question, I tried to remove MS
Antispyware, then download the latest version from the MS
download and it still shows the old definitions, why can't
I get the latest defintions by downloading the latest
version. Is there some other way to remove the old files
in order to allow for newer definitions?

The text at the download site tells the definition level included with the
download. Last I looked, the download was stuck at 5687.

You can also shut down Microsoft Antispyware, delete the two definition
files, and then see what happens--either by downloading or by just starting
the program up again.
