automatic deletion of an email thats been read

if i read an email message in Outlook 2003 why does it disappear if i come
out of the inbox unless i reply to it?

It most likely isn't been deleted as Outlook doesn't hold that as a native
function. You probably have a modified view or filtered applied.

View-> Arrange By-> Current View-> Messages

Once that is selected you can use View-> Arrange By-> Custom to reset the
view (button at the bottom)
