Auto Standby doesn't work, manual standby is ok

My new Dell notebook displayed blue screens (error message: Multiple IRP
Complete Requests, Stop: 0x00000044, "the system has recovered from a serious
error, BCCode: 44, BCP1: 899DD800, BCP2: 00000D62")
I think that this error may have occured during hibernation or standby
I did an F + 11 Symantec System Restore
Since the System Restore, I haven't received another blue screen, but the
system no longer goes into standby after a period of inactivity. I can still
put it into standby mode manually (through the start menu), but it won't
standby automatically after a period of inactivity. I've reset the settings
in Power Options repeatedly--no effect.
I flashed the BIOS but it didn't help.
The OS is XP Pro SP2, and the notebook has 2GB DDR2, 667 MHZ 2 Dimm.
Suggestions, advice? Should I exchange the notebook or does anyone know how
to resolve this?
Thanks!

Looks like it's some sort of hardware driver issue. See this link.

Dear Rock:
Thank you for the link. In the meantime, I found a LOOONG thread on the Dell
Community Forum "Re: Dell 9400 Blue Screen 0x00000044
MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS". It seems I'm not the only person who has had
this problem with this notebook. I've done many of the things other people
did (updating drivers, re-installing QuickSet). I've gone a week without
getting the blue screen. But I have this problem that the "Power Options"
settings have become non-operational in the process. Have you ever heard of a
case where you can put XP Pro into standby manually, but it won't go into
standby automatically after inactivity?
Thanks alot for the help...and any advice on whether to keep, return or
exchange a brand new notebook which is already giving blue screen errors?

I can't answer the question about standby, but I can answer the question
about returning a brand-new notebook already giving errors: absolutely
you should return this immediately for replacement. Do not let Dell
tech support (which has become truly horrible) give you any runaround
or try to put you through any paces. Just tell them it is constantly
blue-screening on a factory install and you want a new machine.

I'm grateful for the helpful advice. Dell has offered to replace the machine,
and I'm very close to saying ok.

But one last request for suggestions about problems with automatic standby.
The auto standby and auto hibernation worked when I first took the machine
out of the box. I think they stopped working after doing the F 11 Symantec
System Restore. I think it's somehow related to the blue screen error (which
seemed to occur during standby). Does anyone have any experience with similar
issues where the Power Options settings just seem to become ineffectual?
Manual standby is ok, and auto monitor shutdown is ok. Automatic standby just
doesn't happen.

Al, you need to just say "yes" and have Dell replace the machine. There
isn't any point spending time and energy trying to figure out why
something doesn't work on a machine with problems like yours. I don't
use those functions on my own laptop (which doesn't run Windows anyway)
and the hibernation and standby functions work perfectly on my son's
Dell Inspiron 6000 (XP Home). So just return the machine and get a new
one and things will work.

Al, I concur with Malke's input. Return it. Standby and hibernation
should work fine on a new laptop. Desktops sometimes have problems in
this area, but for them those features are not that critical. Return
it, why should you go through the grief?

Ok I'm convinced!

Rock, Dell told me the same thing that you did (the technician said it was a
video driver). I downloaded the driver for NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS but that
didn't fix it.

One change did have a clear effect. I went into System devices to uninstall
the ACPI Lid, ACPI Power Button, ACPI Sleep Button and ACPI Thermal Zone.
Upon reboot, the machine did seem to go into auto standby, which immediately
triggered the same blue screen (Multiple IRP Complete Requests, STOP:
0x00000044). After that, power options seemed to work for a while, and then
stopped.

I've been reluctant to go through all the trouble of replacement, plus, now
I'm gun shy...who knows what new problems the replacement machine might have.
This is my first home computer with XP (I've been using win2K which never
gave me any trouble). I'm not used to having to do so much trouble-shooting
and getting nervous about it all!! But if both you and Malke agree, I'm
convinced! Thanks alot for taking the time.

Dell exchanged my notebook. The new notebook is exactly the same as the old
one, except it has a more recent version of the BIOS. It's also giving me the
same grief.

The new notebook also crashed and gave me the same blue screen message as
the first one had done: STOP: 0x00000044 (0x87F17008, 0x00000D62, 0x00000000,
0x00000000) MULTIPLE_IRP_REQUESTS

From the Dell forum, it appears that many people who have this notebook
(E1705 or 9400 or E1505 with Intel Core Duo Processor) have had this same
BSOD with the same STOP message: 0x00000044 (----------, 0x00000D62,
0x00000000, 0x00000000) MULTIPLE_IRP_REQUESTS). Only the first entry in the
parentheses changes with each incident--the rest is the same across incidents
and across computers. Dell doesn't appear to be offering the T2500 processor
in my notebook anymore (unless they just renamed it?)

Does anyone have any advice about what I should do next? When my computer
crashes, MS Crash Analysis offers the analysis that the problem is with an
unspecified driver. I've updated many drivers. Other persons with the problem
have reported updating different drivers. So far, it didn't work for me, and
it's not clear that it has worked for others. Is there a way to analyze a
problem like this in a less hit-and-miss way?

I can't find anything else which is exactly common in all the cases. My
computer is a T2500 (2GHz) but not all the computers that have had problems
are. The only thing they all seem to have in common is the Duo Processor.
