audio hanging system - too many devices sharing IRQ?

My system has 4 devices sharing IRQ 17: on-board LAN, on-board AC97, PCI
USB 2.0 and PCI firewire. XP does not report any IRQ problems.

The system randoms hangs when I play multimedia files such as DVD movie,
DV-AVI or mpeg2 file. After much experimenting I have found that muting
the audio eliminates this problem. So I suspect the AC97 driver is the
most likely culprit.

The problem is: I'm already running the latest driver (AMD AC97 driver
v1.0b). Naturally I want to turn the sound back on. What can I do to
fix this problem?

what have you set the bios for PNP OS installed?, reset configuration?
Disable PNP enable reset
make sure you have DMA enabled on the DVD drive, although it may seem to be
the audio, it may be that the DVD is using all your resources to play back
the video. What are your system specs?
