For a board to use with an Athlon XP, look for Asus model
numbers that begin with K7.

Asus model numbers that begin with K8 are for Athlon64, AthlonFX,
or Opteron.

I don't expect the motherboard prices to change dramatically.
The K8 motherboards seem to have about a 15% price premium over
their K7 counterparts, so that 15% is probably a good indication
of how much room there is for price reductions over the next
year or two.

If you current motherboard supports an Athlon XP3000+, consider
that upgrade. If not, then I suggest you wait until you can
afford both a new motherboard and a new processor - and get
an Athlon64 or AthlonFX combo.

No, that board is for the new AMD 32/64-bit CPUs, like the AMD Athlon 64
3200+. The Athlon 2000+ is a 32-bit CPU only and runs on the Socket-A
(462) boards. Asus boards for the Socket-A start with "A7"...
A7A133, A7A266, A7A266-E, A7M266-D, A7N266, A7N266-C, A7N266-E,
A7N266-VM, A7N8X,A7N8X Deluxe,A7N8X-E Deluxe, A7N8X-VM, A7N8X-X,
A7S266-VM, A7S333, A7V266, A7V266-C, A7V266-E, A7V266-EX, A7V266-M,
A7V266-MX, A7V333, A7V333-X, A7V600, A7V600-X, A7V8X, A7V8X-MX and the
A7V8X-X.

Cheers,
