ASUS 9600XT w/ A7V motherboard

Sammy

It's time for me to let my old ASUS GeForce 2MX rest and put a new
video card into the box, but I cannot seem to decipher an answer from
past posts here.

Will it or won't it work? ASUS A7V 1.02 motherboard and the new ASUS
9600XT vidoe card.

Thanks to all in advance.

Sam.

I notice that ATI is no longer updating their "agpchart" page with
info on the latest video cards. Their loss...

First of all, the ATI page is here. Scroll down to the bottom, to
see how the slots are cut in the video card, indicating the card
can take 3.3V or 1.5/0.8V .

http://www.ati.com/support/faq/agpchart.html

Then, go to Newegg and look at pictures of cards. Here is a 9600XT
- it looks like a 1.5V only card:

Here is a 9700. According to the "agpchart", it supports 1.5 and 3.3V.
This is the picture of part number N82E16814102246 at Newegg.com .

The Rage Fury is a 3.3V only card.

So, it looks like the 9600XT is a 1.5V only card. Fortunately,
the AGP slot shown in the picture in the A7V manual is universal
and doesn't have any keys in it - that implies 1.5 and 3.3V support.
The 9600XT should fit in the slot without bumping into any keys.

The only other issue is AGP I/O power. Some older motherboards don't
have enough I/O power, and the video card will give a black screen
when you power up. I think that the A7V is modern enough that this
won't happen. Do some Google searches to see if my hunch is correct.

(I just checked Google and some people managed to get TNT2 cards
running on an A7V. The 9600XT is worth a shot.)

Here is a similar situation...

Thanks Paul,

That was a lot of good info, but am unsure of the keys on my AGP slot.

I took my video card out and took a look just to make sure of what was
there;

At the front (the closest part to the external part of the case) is a
spacer for AGP-Pro cards and there is a very shallow key there but
maybe it is there just to hold the spacer? And then there is a key
near the back of the AGP slot that seperated the pins of my curent
video card (ASUS 7100) and the "L" shaped PCB bit like it shows on
the ATI 9600 picture. The drawings of the various AGP key positions
on the ATI site don't seem to be to scale and/or I'm having
comprehension problems; so I'm still not sure if I order the card that
it is OK in this motherboard.

Thanks again,

Sam.

If keys are present, I think they would be in the central 2.8 inch
long section. I did an image search on Altavista and got this:
