assigning icons to desktop shortcut icons

hi, please help me learn how to give my desktop icon websites pictures that
are definitive as to their content. i have already R clicked on the icon,
opened its Properties, and then i am only able to choose from three icons.
the arrow key to look at other available icons is grayed out so i cannot look
at anymore than three.

i KNOW that somewhere in xp pro, there are MANY icons that i could choose
from. i want to visually represent to the user what the shortcut is for,
what it applies to. for example, one of my users is a writer and uses many
dictionaries. those web sites are saved onto her desktop as shortcuts.
however, i do not know where i can find icons that would be descriptive as to
that the icon is for a dictionary. that is just one example.

thank you for any help you can give to me. karen

THere is several ways to do this 1st is to do a search for *.ico files and in
properties change the path i would recomend you copy all the ico files to one
directory or create one for them to that file another is to browse to
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe it has icons built into the file you can also use the
following locations C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
%SystemRoot%\system32\mycomput.dll there are many more but the easyist is to
copy all the ico files to one directory.

Browse through these DLLs in the Icon picker dialog:
- Shell32.dll
- Moricons.dll
- Shimgvw.dll
- and others...

[[If you click Change Icon, and there are no icons available, use the
Browse button to find Shell32.dll:
1.. Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then
click Change Icon.
2.. Click Browse, type %systemroot%\system32\shell32.dll in the File
name box, click
Open, click the icon you want to use, click OK, and then click OK.]]

hi there, mike! how nice of you to help me out searching for different icons
to assign to shortcuts.

however, when i do a search for *.ico files, all sorts of files come up in
the search, including anything used for yahoo, mediaplayer, etc.,
representing those icons of programs on my hard drive.

i also followed your directions in opening up the IE file; however, in
exploring each of ITS files, i found nothing that indicates that the files
contain icons.

the search for "%SystemRoot%\system32\mycomput.dll" yielded MYCOMPUT.DLL
inside of the folder called C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. I opened the folder and saw
that SOME of the icons contained in IT look like i might use them; however,
this is not the file that i recall enountering a long time ago with all of
the xp (pro) icons.

do you know which file contains the wide and large number of windows icons?

thank you every so kindly, karen
