Application Management service now disable (after SP3)

After installing SP3 on a brand new Windows XP Home computer (actually,
after a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows XP Home), I see that the
Application Management service is set to Disabled. I didn't happen to
check the status of this after applying SP2, but I am wondering if this
service is now set to Disabled when SP3 is installed.

I can't find much info in Goog.... um, I mean Windows Live Search about
this issue.

Some Web pages claim that the Application Management service is required
for Add/Remove Programs to work, but this is not true. The service
description (that this service "provides software installation services
such as Assign, Publish, and Remove") doesn't really tell us much either.

Any comments would be appreciated. Should I set this service to Manual
instead of Disabled? Did installing SP3 disable this service? Or is it
only intended for XP Professional computers that are part of a domain?
This computer will not be in a domain (of course, it's running XP Home).

Thanks.

I've had the same problem, and I also had several viruses seemingly install
at the same time, so I'm not sure if its the viruses that disabled this
protocol or the SP3, or if they got installed together! I can't get rid of
the viruses either. The thing with mine though is that there are NO remove
buttons or change buttons available except for programs I reinstall or have
as a new install. That would be typical of a virus, disabling the
remove/change buttons. And they're not being recognized as running in Task
Manager anymore either. I got rid of a couple that way. Or they've embedded
themselves into the root system files.

Its been 2 wks since this update; I've been to Live One Care, I've got
Windows Defender, I've even purchased a newer version of McAfee's Protection
Suite (another 80 bucks down the drain). Its messed with my registry and I'm
getting ready to toss my computer! The list of programs in Add/Remove is
completely erroneous in some cases with repeated listings of the same names
and no apparent fix available. And my services manager says it can't even
find the component anymore!

I've had no problems til this last update, and have been able to get rid of
any viruses for the last 4 years I've had this computer. Now I'm going to end
up having to reformat and reinstall an old SP1 version of XP and start over,
too!

Bill Gates retiring?? Yea, sure, go ahead, and leave us with this problem
child. He wants to go help the needy in other countries; how about helping
the needy here at home that helped build your mega-wealth? (sorry, had to
rant there.. but come on!)

Somebody out there has to have an answer. Please????

btw, David, SP2 didn't disable the AMS.
