Appearance: XP style won't stick

I recently upgraded from Windows Me to Windows XP Home
Edition. When I go to the Control Panel's Display applet
and choose the Appearance tab, I select Windows XP style.

After Applying and Closing, I find that the chosen Windows
XP style (blue, olive green or silver) appears as expected.

However, it does not stick. I often find after a reboot
that the visual style has reverted to the Windows Classic look.

This also seems to happen when I have made any change to
the Startup menu.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone explain the
cause and/or provide a fix?

Thanks.

Hi, Kelly. Thanks for this. I tried the Registry patch and the
replacement DLL -- but the problem continued -- the appearance reverted
to Windows Classic after a restart or two.

However, it looks like I have found a solution. During my difficulties
the Theme was displayed as "Modified theme". I changed it to "Windows
XP", then applied my own mods (different Desktop image, color scheme to
Olive Green). Now the Theme is listed as "Windows XP (Modified)" and it
seems to have survived several restarts and reboots.

There seems to be little logic in the system's behavior -- if I ask that
Appearance be Windows XP style, and the appearance changes
accordingly, I should have the right to expect that it will continue to
look that way. I was looking for a more stable and reliable system when
I upgraded from Me to XP Home, and in some ways I got it -- but now I'm
encountering fresh waves of bugs and other maddening behavior -- with a
waste of many hours -- that are turning my thoughts towards Linux.

Thanks again.

Then you will be really on a steep learning curve!!!

Well, it turns out that my fix didn't work. I have been reduced to
asking for help from Microsoft.
