aoe II in xp

help! i can't get aoe ii to run in xp home. it seems to have installed ok. i did some searching before i posted and followed Jimmy's following suggestions:

1) I have checked to see if it is a software conflict. I disabled startup programs using jstsoft2001.
2) I ran a virus scan.
3) I ran Spybot
4) I did a disk cleanup.
5) I did a disk defrag.
6) i've got all the current windows updates.
7) I've got all the current shipset, sound, video, and directx drivers.

I've also tried to run from a clean boot and god knows what else I tried. All the articles in the knowledge base at microsoft.com that had to do with a game not "running" i read and followed the instructions. The damn thing still doesn't run!

Extremely frustrated....please help!

Hi Peaches,

What happens exactly when you click the shortcut to the game?

Lets run a diagnostic of your system to see if we can pinpoint the problem.
In order to Create a dxdiag.txt file: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
Afterwards click the "Save All Information..." button in the bottom row.
Send the Dxdiag file: Click Insert / File Attachment using Outlook Exp.,
or open the file in notepad, click Edit / Select All / Copy and then Paste
the data into your reply using Ctrl+V. Good luck. Let's hope this helps! :)

Hi Peaches,

Looks like that graphics chip (Savage 4) is no longer
supported since their latest driver is almost 3 years old.
There's a few suggestions for black screen issues with AOK at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830651&Product=gms
and they all point to updating your drivers. Since S3 hasn't
released any drivers for DirectX 9, you might consider using
this as an excuse to install a video card in your computer.

If you do, I recommend a Ti4200 64 MB or higher.
Before you do though, reinstall your video drivers again if
you didn't reinstall them since installing DirectX 9.

If anyone reading this is playing AOK with S3 Savage 4,
and DirectX 9.0b please post your advice to this thread.

Jimmy,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did reinstall the video drivers since the installation of Directx 9, but as you say, the most current driver is 3 years old. *sigh*

Thanks for your help, and if anyone else has an suggestions, I'll be happy to try them!

Thanks again!

I was having the same problem on my PC, running Windows XP system and AOE II. I finally had to uninstall the latest updated ZoneAlarm off my system, now AOE II works fine. Good Luck, and have a nice day.
