Any way to completely reinstall W2K networking?

Or at least fix the registry entries?

Got a bit of a problem here...

Some sort of malware has corrupted my W2K networking. It all started when I
tried to run AdAware to remove some "Web Offer" popups, then all of a sudden
my computer wanted to shutdown complaining about the lsass file. When I
rebotted, no networking whatsoever.

There are so many symptoms, I don't know where to begin, but here's the
bottom line right now.

1) I had to install another nic to get any networking to function. My
on-board nic is listed under Device Manager/Network Adpaters (with a yellow
!), but I cannot Uninstall it. The correct drivers are loaded, it just will
not activate whatsoever.

2) It appears my registry was corrupted by the malware as well. I've had to
copy certain registry sections from another computer to mine which finally
got my IP stack functional again. Also, this move corrected the Device
Manager/Network Adapters section which had been labeled "Unknown" until I
imported registry entries from another system.

3) Cannot make VPN connections. Every time I create a new VPN connection,
it is listed with a big red X under Network Connections. The Connect option
is deselected. Same symptom if I create a dial up option.

I would like to have W2K completely uninstall it's networking section and
reinstall it, hopefully, reconfiguring (or fixing) the registry. Is this
possible?

Thanks for any help here folks.

From your description, try this program to fix things up:

John,

Thanks for the help. Although, it did not resolve the VPN issues and the
big red X. Still won't work I did attempt to use a Winsock repair utility
as well. Still the big red X. And, my on-board NIC is still uninstallable.
Somthing weird has happened here.

Is there any way short of re-installing Windows 2000 to just reinstall the
networking subsystem and all associated registry entries?

Best,
Spirit

A shutdown causes by an LSASS error indicates an active Sasser worm
infection. I'd suggest you fix that up before you try anything else.

Visit my web site - http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm - and see if the
process there can help you narrow the problems down and make them
manageable.

Richard,

Thanks much. Although, I had already gotten rid of all malware on this
particular machine. Still, cannot create an active VPN connection. Still
getting the big red X with a disabled Connect selection.

BTW - where are the settings stored for the VPN connections? I cannot find
them in the registry.

Best,
Spirit
