Another problem with sound on Acer

K

KORraN

Yesterday I downloaded "brand new" Vista. I burned ISO on DVD,
formated first partition (with Win XP, second was for important data)
via Vista setup and started to install OS on it. Unfortunately, the
DVD had some errors and installation crashed on 11%. I decided to
install back XP from hidden partition made by Acer. And what did I
see? That this $#^&*@ Vista merge all partitions (even that hidden!)
and clear whole hard drive from data...

Today I've installed XP Professional from CD (cause I don't have
hidden partition...). There were several problems with finding drivers
but finally everything is working. Everything? No, that would be so
beatiful. When I plug-in the headphones there is sound from them
and...from built-in speakers! I was trying to find if there is
possibilty to mute speakers but couldn't do that.

Can anyone help me? Maybe someone had the same problem and has solved
it?

Install Linux.

It seems like you've gotten what you deserve.

Linux is not user-friendly and other members of family would have huge
problems with it.

These are the perils of being an early adopter.

But at least other owners of Acer laptops will have
learned of your lesson, when they look in Google later
and see your misfortune.

As for your sound, it would depend on what kind of sound
subsystem is present. With AC'97, a headphone jack may have
contacts in it, to mute the speakers. If the sound subsystem
is HDaudio, the headphone jack and the speakers can be on
separate channels. In that case, the mute function may be
under software control. You would want to look in whatever
panel shows the speaker setup, to see if "cloning" had been
enabled. On some HDaudio chips, you can make a copy or
"clone" of the speaker output, for driving headphones.

Gee, this is a vindictive crowd, isn't it? The guy asks for help, and most
of you just tell him to go with an operating system used by about 1% of all
people or, somehow, he "deserved" this problem

From what's he's written, I've made the assumption that he's attempted
to install a pirated copy of Vista. Why would he download a copy when a
disc comes with his registration key?

If I am wrong on that, my apologies.

Acer may have better sound drivers available from their support site.
I can't be too specific without knowing your model.

Anyone who buys Microsoft products, or top-posts, deserves it. :)

Microsoft does allow a download of Vista for some users...

Exactly. Especially for students which partcipate in MSDN Academic
Alliance ;).

Thats the point. I will change my laptop as soon as I'll have enough
money.

Well, I have "High Definition" system but there is no software mute
function for speakers or headphones in Realtek HD software. I can mute
only whole sound...
Oh, and I have the newest drivers from Acer's site.
