"An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com"

Hi guys. I'm in Australia (if that's relevant) and have XP Home.

A local computer magazine ("Choice Computer") is this month advising its
readers to synchronize their computer clocks by going to Control Panel,
clicking on Date and Time Properties, clicking on the Internet Time tab,
ticking "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server", then
using the Update Now button.

But when I do all that, I end up with the message: ""An error occurred
while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com"

Turning off my computer's firewall (Zone Alarm) makes no difference. I
still get the above message.

Any advice please?

Thanks - Ken (in Oz)

FYI To Microsoft: Windows Time Synchronization Completely Broken (Vista,
2003, XP are all broken)

I had frequently problems when synchronizing with time.nist.gov with
corresponding error messages, selected time.windows.com half a year ago and
have had only a couple of errors ever since. Scheduled time for
synchronization is 03 AM "Microsoft Std. Time", if that matters.

And while at it; as you didn't provide us with a lot of details regarding
your system, check this link (37,400 search results!) to get an idea whether
any of the problems addressed could apply for yours as well - or not:

Thanks for the tock.---
I couldn't connect with time.nist or time.windows but tock worked so fast I
almost missed it!
But why? I never had a problem before, and then for the last few weeks, I've
been unable to connect. I turned off Firewall and that didn't matter.
strange...

I had to change mine to time-a.nist.gov before it would work. It may work
for you too.

Wowee! Thanks, Unknown, for <tock.usno.navy.mil>. Instant success!

A downbeat note just a day or so later. I'm not at all sure that the
CORRECT time was entered. The clock on my computer has never been very
far from the correct time. Yet just now, using the time signal on my
local radio station, I noticed that the computer's clock was a good
minute fast. Hmm.

I'll make you a bet the radio signal is wrong! Appears many of the TV
stations in my area don't keep accurate time either.

One other thing Ken---the time sync only occurs once a week. It can be
changed to sync more often with a registry
change or you can do it manually at any time by date/time-- internet
time---update now.

Have you tried tock.usno.navy.mil?

How do I add that to the drop-down server list?

(I'm having the same problem as OP. time.nist.gov doesn't work for me
either.)

Never mind, I figured it out. And tock.usno.navy.mil works while I'm still
getting that error with time.windows.com and time-a.nist.gov even though
both used to work.

Glad to hear that. Someone jumped all over me for saying this but I'll
repeat it.
'Trust the military'.-----------It works.

As the discussion went on with some inconsistency in the outcome of
connecting to time servers, the link:

http://tf.nist.gov/service/pdf/win2000xp.pdf

may provide some additional ideas and thoughts like:
- Background information with how it works on Windows (or not)
- A table with more NIST ITS Server Addresses
- Configuring Windows to use ITS
- Troubleshooting hints, with a special note with regard to Dell computers.

Some of the information given in the article will apply for other time
servers than NIST.
