An error occurred while receiving the fax

Subject message is consistently, and persistently received
on 'most any occasion when we try to receive a fax.

Since XP Pro has been installed, I think the PC has
received ONE fax, sent from the fax machine on an
alternate line, sitting next to the PC. NEVER has another
machine sent a fax that was successfully received.

How can I diagnose this failure? How can I ascertain what
is failing where? Even the phone company says all's well
on the line. Even though we do NOT receive anything more
than subject message.

As an example, the Fax Monitor currently shows:
17:17:0 Ringing
17:17:5 Ringing
17:17:8 The call was answered
17:18:1 An error occurred while receiving the fax

The last line has a white X in a solid red circle to the
left of the time stamp.

In view of the highly revealing nature of the message, I
am at a complete loss as to where to go, or what to do, to
persuade this PC to receive a fax with this software.

I have been having the same problem, as well as many
other people. The answer is not being addressed by
microsoft. Test this, set you fax to manual answer, call
from another phone # to your fax/ computer #, when the
box shows do you want to answer as a fax, click yes, (my
phone that I called from just kept ringing, but the fax
console said receiving fax, then after a few minutes the
fax console said error with the x you are talking about)
the computer never picked up the call. And, Yes my modem
is compatable, and I have run all the updates and service
packs. Whats up Microsoft, are you going to address
this????????????

Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP.

Please check whether your modem is a Microsoft Certified modem. To find
this, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...ryl3&pgn=1f29b141-e504-4a2f-bb4a-f669b708567b
for external modems or
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...ryl3&pgn=f7600b43-10c1-4485-adcb-a203f7861b4b
for modem cards and check if your modem is Fax compatible Microsoft
certified modem.

If your modem in the already in the certified list, please check your event
viewer (run eventvwr in the command line and go to 'Application') for any
relevant Fax events.
