Alt Codes not working

I just started having problems with my alt codes not working e.g. alt
+248 results in a 'degree' symbol. I restarted and tried an alt code
and it worked..it typed 4 characters of that code, then quit working
again.

Any ideas?

I wonder if you are getting confused over these Alt codes, like many others.
Alt+248 does not produce the same character as Alt+0248. The former gives
the degree symbol, but the latter gives the 'ø' character.

Thanks for clarifying that, but that's not the issue. I was trying to
get the degree symbol, but I got a ••• instead. (I just tried the alt
+248 and got that goofy character there). °Ø0

Ok!!!! Wow!!! For some reason, out of curiosity I typed 'alt
+0248'.....and I got a degree symbol!!! (seriously). You can see it at
the end of the last line. Then I typed 'alt+00216' because 'alt+0216'
is the diameter symbol (which isn't working either) and I got a Ø
which is the diameter symbol. So then I did 'alt+248' and got the '0'.

So now I'm as confused as ever! These codes used to work and as you
can see in my first post, after a restart, they work once. I guess now
they work if I add an additional zero to the front of the code!

Obviously the exact symbol you get depends on the character set you are
using but Alt+2 or 3 numbers acceses a different part of the set than
Alt+0+2 or 3 numbers, though there is some overlap. You can, in fact, type
as many zeros as you like before the number part - any excess over 1 zero is
ignored.

M.I.5¼, regarding the 2 quotes above, it seems that you are
contradicting yourself. I may not be entirely understanding you
though. Your first post I would agree with as to what "should" happen.
I'm not experiencing what "should" happen though. That's my problem/
question.

You mentioned the "character set you are using...". What do you mean
by "Character Set". Possibly that's a clue to my issue.

In the character set I am using (the newsgroup default), Alt+248 produces
'°'. Alt+0248 produces 'ø'. Similarly Alt+000000248 produces 'ø', because
the first 5 zeros are ignored. However, if you use a different font it may
or may not have a different character set for none, some or all of the
extended characters and the Alt codes may produce different characters.
Wingdings, for example, produces a cross hair gun sight and an arrow
respectively for the above two codes. Most alphanumeric fonts will produce
the '°' and 'ø'.

I have reread your original post and I am not clear as to what your problem
actually is. Could you perhaps tell us what is happening and what you
expect to happen.

I have never seen this behaviour before so can't offer any solution. What
does happen if you type Alt+248? Though I rather suspect that you are going
to say, "nothing". I might have suspected malware, but I can find no
reference to any malware that does this (unless it is very new of course).

Are you able to do a system restore to a time before this started happening?
