"All Users\Start Menu" vs. <My Name> Start Menu

Hi all,
I notice that the popup menu of programs (accessible on the desktop by
clicking "Start\All Programs") is split into two folders.

There's a folder called "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu"
that contains some of the programs, and then there's another folder
called "C:\Documents and Settings\Litvintchouk\Start Menu" (i.e. a
subfolder with my name) that contains the rest of the programs.

Why are there two different Start Menu folders? I don't remember
anything like this in Windows 95.

Steven,

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
This applies to all the user profiles (common start menu)

C:\Documents and Settings\Litvintchouk\Start Menu
This applies to your user profile only. *You can add any personalized
shortcuts here without affecting other profiles.*

Start menu folder is a combination of the above two locations. Most of the
other things work the same way in XP (Common Desktop, Common Start Menu,
Common Desktop etc)

I have only just upgraded to XP and this split menu would be very useful.

Unfortunately, Start\All programs only shows the current user's programs
on my system. I have looked for a switch to enable the viewing of All
users programs in vain.

Can anyone please tell me how to enable this split menu?

Howard,

Make sure you don't have the policy/setting "NoCommonGroups" enabled.

Ramesh,

Thank you for that. The value in the registry was wrong and that problem
has now been corrected.

Unfortunately, another problem has been created. All of my desktop icons
have doubled up.

Using explorer, in Desktop every icon is shown twice. In my user profile
desktop, they are shown only once. On the desktop itself, they are shown
twice.

If I try to remove any single icon, all other representations of that
icon are also removed. I am, therefore, left with either no icons or
twice the needed icons.

I hope you can solve this problem as well as the last.

Regards

Howard Neil.

Howard,

Glad that helped. For the duplicate Desktop icons issue, see:

Hi Ramesh,

It seems that there is another problem which, I believe is related to
the previous one.

When I boot up, there are a number of icons that sometimes do not appear
in my taskbar tray. As far as I can tell, the programs have loaded
correctly but they just have not placed their icons in the tray. When
this happens there seems to be a related problem with me being unable to
access my ISP to download e-mail. I can log in OK and read newsgroups
but I am just unable to collect e-mail. I hope that this is not a red
herring.

As an example, when this happens, one program (TimeUp - an on line
timer) is shown as running in the Task Manager. If I close it and then
re-start it, the icon appears correctly.

If I keep re-starting the computer, the icons will eventually load
correctly. This also seems to work with logging off then on again.

I have looked through your excellent web site but cannot find an answer.
Have you any ideas, please?

Howard,

Perhaps a startup program or service is causing the delay? You may try a
clean-boot and identify the culprit. Also, a long delay after logon might be
caused by the Network Card (as seen in previous newsgroup posts). Not sure
if that would apply here:

Ramesh,

Thanks for the reply. I think the problem *may* be cured though. I had
been trying to get the system stable before I upgraded the hardware (new
motherboard, CPU, etc). Today, everything arrived so I went ahead
anyway. XP did not wish to start with the new hardware so I went into
the repair section of the XP disk.

This not only cured that problem but it also seems to have cured my
wayward icons.

Sorry to have wasted your time on this occasion.
