All shortcuts must be minimized ?

Andy

I have put some shortcuts into my START folder to run when I log on.

It seems that if I want a program to start minimized then ALL the
shortcuts to that program must specify a Run value of minimized.

I have not seen this in the documentation.

Can anyone tell me if they know where more info can be found. I
would like to read answers to the things below which I did not have
time to test.

My tests have not established if this means:
(a) all shortcuts
(b) all shortcuts in a location where the shortcut could be a hotkey
(desktop or Start menu).

Nor do I know if a reboot or logon/logoff is needed for test changes
to the shortcuts to be accepted.

And I do not know if the finding is equally true for Run=normal or
Run=maximized. Maybe one is a default value which occurs when
conflicting settings occur?

You are right and yet it seems that they do. Or have you found that
they don't?

Don't What ?
Affect each other?
They can't.

The only problem would be is, if you are assigning Hot Keys. If you assign
the same hotkey for more than one shortcut, only one will work.

The shortcuts do in fact affect one another. And that they could is not
diffcult to see as they each point back directly to the sorce object and
inconsistencies may cause problems there.

But why not try what I have found about opening "minimised". (See the
description in my original posting). I consistently get the same result
when I experiment.

Cannot duplicate here. Each shortcut has its own properties. The properties
are not carrying over to other shortcuts for the same object. What might
explain what you're seeing is some programs use mechanisms other
than/besides shortcut properties. Example: registry entries or ini files
might be utilized to remember and re-use values for various states.

Hi Sharon, I get this reliably. I think it is to do with the
folders.

See if you did what I do to get this linking:

(1) I have an application (EXE) in Program Files.

(2) I create a shortcut on the desktop to the EXE by dragging the
file while hold SHIFT and CTRL

(3) For convenience of launching I might associate a hotkey combo
with the shortcut but this is not necessary: I open the shortcut and
set properties to have a shortcut key combo of CTRL + ALT + H and I
set the RUN value to "normal".

(4) I move this shortcut to my own START menu in Docs&Settings. I
test the hotkey combo and it works.

(5) Now imagine I want this program to launch automatically when I
log on. So I either go back to the EXE and create a new shortcut in
my STARTUP or I can make a copy of the first shortcut (remving the
hotkey combo).

(6) I have a shortcut in STARTUP. Now I launch the shortcut. The
app starts and the window size is "normal".

(7) Then I go to the START menu and in the properties of the shortcut
I change Run to "minimized". I do not execute the shortcut.

(8) I go back to the STARTUP menu and launch my shortcut (remember
it says Run=normal) and the app starts MINIMIZED. Do you get this
unexpected result?

(9) To make the app start not "minimized" but "maximized" (from
launching the shortcut in STARTUP), I have to go to START and change
the Run value there to "maximized" as well as changing the Run value
in the STARTUP shortcut to "maximized".

I hope you get the same so you can see what I mean.

I followed the steps as they were in the thread when I first posted that I
could not duplicate.

I went ahead and followed the steps in this post just in case I previously
missed a detail in this thread - still cannot duplicate. My start shortcut
still starts in normal window at #8. It does not start minimized. Invoked
program using shortcut key and by clicking shortcut in start menu. Normal
both times.

I skipped #9 since my results were already different than yours and because
I concentrated on normal and minimized -skipping the maximized state
entirely.
