Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel opens blank page

Sirman Celayir

On my Win2000 setup with all Critical and Recommended
updates to date, when I click on the Add/Remove Programs
icon, I get a completely blank page. Why and How do I
correct this? The following may also help you to answer.

1) Occasionally I get a message that says "mshta.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows." There
are 2 listings of this file, one (older) in System32, the
other in ServicePackFiles.

2) I maintain an image copy of the entire partition. On
the copy Add/Remove works. When I copy the same onto the
first partition, it does NOT on the latter. Curious...

Please send a reply to my email address too. Thanks,

Sirman

Hi Sirman,

Try using the System File Checker to repopulate the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dllcache
folder and then scan all protected system files and replace incorrect versions with
correct Microsoft versions. For more information, see the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base Articles:

KB285195 - Mshta.exe Error Message Appears When You Start the Add/Remove Programs
Tool in Control Panel

KB222471 - Description of the Windows System File Checker Tool

And if you are running a version of Windows 2000 earlier than Windows 2000 Service
Pack 4 (SP4), see:
